Thobias Harris for Dev swap.

Tobias was a guy I thought would have been a good pickup that summer (2024) when we had some cap flexibility. We ended up going for CP3 and absorbing HB instead.

Harris was coming off a massive contract from Philly that most people thought was a huge overpay... but I thought he would have fit nicely as our PF. He makes basically the same as Devin but is expiring... but he's also quite valuable to the best team in the east... so I'm guessing DET doesn't want to move him and they certainly don't want Main Character Dev.

The Rockets have traded Vassilis Spanoulis, a second round pick and cash to the San Antonio Spurs for the rights to Argentine power forward Luis Scola and 6-foot-10 center Jackie Butler.

ClutchFans has confirmed with a league source that the deal is as reported, though the Rockets can not mention it until 9pm Central time tonight. The pick given up by Houston will be a 2009 second-rounder.

We wanted off Butler's contract, but, what a price and with a division rival.

I'm still pretty surprised that no coach has yet figured out how to get a respectable & winning 12 mpg out of Oscar Tshiebwe, who's probably the best offensive rebounder on the planet right now. It just seems like a team that likes to jack up lots of threes could use him in specific and limited minutes. He's on a very cheap two way deal with Utah, getting no minutes on a bad team when he's not busy setting rebounding records in the G league.

Sounds like Tobias has been up/down for them this year, and is a fixture in Markenen to DET trade gossip. But its a good point that theyd probably move him only if they also find a solution for their starting PF -- so not Dev. The other DET possibility is Robinson and LaVert (once theyre tradable) but not sure they'd want to give up their best shooter either.

Is Dev untradeable now? Or basically filler for a bigger trade where Spurs send out lots of other asset? How sad...

I don't think his value is as low as most here perceive it to be, however he is trending downward and if this continues he may become untradeable unless it's as salary ballast in a larger deal. I've not been in favor of pulling the trigger on a big deal until the summer, but he's making me re-evaluate that stance for sure..

They are waiting on next year when TH is back. They aren't moving Siakim.

I don't think they'll be interested in trading away key players unless someone overpays.
It's a throwaway year for them, but they'll be looking to get right back into it next season.

But they do have some cap issues since they're at $182M for the next season without Mathurin's extension and they should be getting a top5 pick which is another 10 to 15.

The only offer that could work would be Jeremy/Barnes/Olynyk and some more filler, they don't need Devin's long-term money.
Spurs wouldn't trade Keldon.

I just can't see another trade for anyone making over 20 or so happening.
Best case scenario would be upgrading Jeremy+Olynyk and getting a legit forward.

Before the season started I said we shouldn't use any more FRPs unless we're healthy and legit at the deadline.
Right now we're at 57W pace.
Obviously our schedule hasn't been that difficult, but we also haven't had a full roster yet.
If we're above 50W pace at the deadline, I'm not against using a FRP if we can get a legit PF that would be the difference maker in the playoffs.

With the Timberwolves and Warriors struggling, the West looks like it has just 4 legit teams not counting the Spurs.
Lakers are really bad defensively, Rockets don't have any real point guards which is really important in the playoffs and Nuggets are still completely Jokic-reliant.
I might be too optimistic, but if everyone is healthy and we get another high end role player I think this team can match up with anyone other than OKC.

We're talking about a player who preferred going to historically bad Detroit so he can chuck up shots over staying with the Nuggets and competing for the title because he didn't want to be the third option.
And the offers weren't even that far apart, wasn't about the money.

If he was on a reasonable contract I'd be fine with it, but 32/34/36 is too much. And he'll be 32 before the end of the season.

Age aint shit. Harrison Barnes was 32 when we got him and he’ll give us a solid 3+ years. I’d rather a player who knows what the hell they’re doing over one that needs to learn how to play (Carter Bryant, Sochan, any rookie). We don’t have the resources to go after players in their prime so you can throw fantasies of getting someone between 25 to 30 away. Like I said, we can’t be picky.

It’s not only the size of the contract, it’s the timing of it and how it fits with the team’s bigger picture. As far as I can tell, it expires the year where our core pieces will need their big extensions. Now, I can be wrong about that but my point is it’s not only about the percentage of the cap a player takes up.

This point here is ironically the same point our favorite poster fails to realize.

Anyone can point to a big number and whine about it.

I’d bet the Spurs are looking at Fox’s contract and ability strategically in the context of the team.

Let’s say Fox performs to the level of his contract or just about good enough to where other players on the team recognize that he’s the second best player on a winning team. What does that really mean? It means Castle or Harper aren’t the second best player and are likely getting third or fourth option touches. And what does that mean? It means they’re probably not performing to the level of a max contract player and the Spurs could probably sign them for cheaper than if they were the second best. And if this happens, and they elevate their game even further to supplant Fox’s position as second best, then you have players on a great deal and then you can trade Fox for good assets.

It’s all about timing and strategy.

I see them standing pat. 20% of the season is done so far and they haven't had a healthy roster yet. If we somehow fall out of playoff contention, then things change.

Jeremy is probably the only one on the trading block and he won't get us much, tbh.
