The Mitch Effect

Modern NBA, the game's never over. But we seriously have got to talk about these third quarters....
This can’t be stated enough. The league wants games to be competitive. Everything about our modern defense is built around offensive freedom.

Big runs are the norm these days.

But our 3rd quarters are a mess. That’s on Mitch.

That’s surprising. With 23 games in hand, that averages out to -2.6 per game. I would’ve thought it was closer to like -10 per game (-230), and that’s not exaggerating.

I wonder if Wemby’s watching this and thinking “I’ll stop this 3Q meltdown shit from happening” or “Damn, sometimes our defense really sucks when I’m not out there covering up mistakes”

It'd be interesting to know how he looks at it.

I think they said Steph learned a lot watching while he was sitting out. Interesting that the three guards and Vic have had to sit out games giving them all a different perspective of how some of the other players on the team plays.

getting crushed in the paint without Wemby. if he is out against the Lakers, Donkic is going to rip the Spurs apart in the paint.

I'm not ready to concede the game against the Lakers even if Vic doesn't play. Spurs just need to play as hard as they can, and I'll be OK with the outcome if they bring it. They just gotta stay focused the whole game, not for a quarter or two.

Against both CLE and NOP, both teams at halftime realized what should be quite obvious: just attack the Spurs in the paint. We need Wemby back asap, and a Bismack replacement wouldn't hurt either.

I think this is the best take in the thread. Nicely done.

I will say though that there is reason to believe the Spurs would have been more consistent than they’ve shown so far. I’m frustrated by the team’s lack of focus, especially in the third quarter. They have really got to get better at closing bad teams out. Their record in clutch games is saving their bacon right now, but they’re clearly not in OKC’s league yet.
I think in todays basketball of at some point each team is down 15 - 20 and comes back to make it a 1 to 5 point game...just getting a win is all that matters. Only team immune to this is OKC and they are on a maniacal run to try and out do the 72 win bulls.

Bismack replacement will be a good gauge of how serious this team is this year. A 3rd legit center is more of an all in move and I wonder if the Spurs would do that not even a full season removed from being terrible.

Also...kind of funny we got the best center prospect maybe of all time...but we still need to get a somewhat legit 3rd center . Half the teams in the nba don't have a legit backup center but we need a 3rd one . Math aint mathing.

First 13 games of the season 3rd Q differential: +1
Last 10 games of the season 3rd Q differential: -61

Correlates to Wemby sucking on his pacifier, opposing teams are adjusting much easier at halftime with him out, perhaps.
