Player Sochan's Extension Watch

If I'm Sochan's agent, I'm proactively offering a discount deal. Something that makes Wright give extra thought and hope he doesn't wait until next summer.

Sochan said before he really wants that second contract to set himself up financially. So I assume he wants a lot more than what the Spurs are willing to offer

No extension for the guy who we are undefeated in the preseason without. Future is looking bright boys

Is he still tradable this season? I don't mean is he tradable because he can bring an asset. I mean are we allowed to trade him if another team wants him or if he's a sweetener on a larger deal.

yes he's tradeable

IIRC it's only after an RFA signs a qualifying offer that they aren't tradeable

It's great to see the front office isn't handing out charity contracts anymore. They seem to have their shit fully together. That said, I hope Jeremy plays well and gives us all something to think about this year because it would be a good outcome for both him and the team.

vecenie noted that Jazz are likely delaying Kessler's deal so they can take advantage of his cap hold number during next offseason's free agency

Agreed because in theory, if he improves and plays well, he fills an important role on the team as a versatile big wing defender. He just really needs to provide something positive on offense

spurs’ assorted Twitter sniffers have very confidently said that anyone predicting such an outcome doesn’t “know ball”. Can’t count how many times I saw that if you “know ball” then you were in the group of elite basketball minds certain that he’s a 25-30 mill player. I’m not sure if anyone told the 1,000 podcasters, National media members or spurs executives the bad news about their brains.

Carter has a lot to show before talking about taking Sochan or Vassell spot. The little I saw him get me a bit worried, he cannot hit the side of a barne to save his life... he is a 3D without the 3. Now obviously rookie, summer league blabla etc etc.. but saying he is a work in progress is a nice way to put it. Showing energy on D won't be enough for him to get a spot
Jeremy is also 3&D with no D. He is in year 4, and he just started shooting 2 handed free throws. Carter is a better athlete than Sochan, and he has better touch. He is raw, but he is a better prospect than Jeremy was.

The Spurs New Media Brigade (Podcasters, YouTubers and Twitter Journos) are massive Sochan fanboys. They must be in shambles right now. My favorite was when Clan the Spurs Fan had Jeremy as his deal breaker in any Lauri or Fox talks.

This is one of my favorite parts of the Jeremy discussion... people talk about whether he will develop the ability to shoot 3s forgetting the guy hasn't even demonstrated the ability to shoot 2-handed FTs yet.

the cope on reddit has been

a) it makes sense because sadly he's to injury prone
b) he's getting screwed by the new cba

tbh, both of these are true... they just aren't the full story

I would have been fine with an MLE-sized contract but I doubt Sochan gets offered more than that in RFA next summer. I hope Sochan continues to improve and makes matching an MLE deal from another team worthwhile next summer.

I know that there will be more teams next year with salary cap space to work with, but it’s not like the teams are going to work to distribute it appropriately among the restricted free agents plus regular free agents and trade bait. The players who are going into this season without a new extension really need to have a breakout year to get the real payday they’re hoping for. Sochan really needs to step up, and I honestly hope he does. If he doesn’t work out, then the 4 spot in the future is suddenly looking very thin after him and Barnes.

the spurs paid murray coming off a torn ACL because he showed what he could be. even if jeremy was completely healthy, with the body of evidence we have about his play, he wouldnt be extension worthy.

the caveat is if he was healthy enough to play in eurobasket and really balled out there and showed something new, and continued that in camp/preseason... there'd be a conversation. but im not a big believer that in the 2 offseason months prior to eurobasket he developed his game more than he has in the past 3 years

"Other teams have found a (often painful) way out of their stupid mistakes, so we should feel fine making our own stupid mistakes!"

What a take.
Not what I was saying at all.

There are no untradeable contracts. Beals last trade WAS under this CBA, and it returned assets.

Carter is in that pipeline, and hopefully they draft another guy with a =>6’10” wingspan to compete with him for the future starting role.
