People made a huge deal about reports saying the Spurs heavily scouted Stephon Castle. The way it gets discussed, you’d think he was the only player they were tracking closely, which makes no sense. Just because Castle is the only one we heard about doesn’t mean the organization wasn’t doing the same level of work on other players behind the scenes. Public reporting only shows a fraction of what teams actually do. If people want to lean on that reporting as proof of intent, then the same standard should apply here. Mitch Johnson literally said after signing Emanuel Miller that they’ve “been following him for some time.” That should carry the same weight. If scouting language matters for Castle, it matters for Miller too.

Now looking at Miller himself, the profile is interesting in the context of what the Spurs are building. He’s basically a modern 6’7” power forward. Mobile feet, plays with strength, attacks physically, and has that Jimmy Butler-type body movement where he plays through contact and stays balanced. He has a nose for the ball and rebounds well, which fits the identity of a connective, effort-driven frontcourt player rather than a finesse big. His path on this roster looks like clear pipeline development at the 4.

This also lines up with what the Spurs have been signaling about roster construction around Wemby. They don’t seem interested in pairing him with a stretch big or a tweener 4/5 who struggles to defend in space. They also don’t look like they’re chasing a traditional bigger power forward in the 6’8”+ mold. The tradeoff there is usually lateral quickness, and when you’re building around Wemby’s defensive range, you want someone who can actually move on the perimeter. That’s why you keep seeing wing-sized players filling that role. Carter Bryant fits that idea. Champagnie fits that idea. Even Harrison Barnes, before age slowed him, was basically a big wing rather than a true power forward.

If you zoom out, Emanuel Miller might be another data point in that same philosophy. A fully developed version of him, especially if the shooting improves, is probably close to what they envision as an ideal long-term 4 next to Wemby. Physical, mobile, wing-sized, rebounds, defends, and doesn’t compromise perimeter coverage. That’s the part people should sit with, because this signing may be less about depth and more about revealing what the Spurs actually want that position to look like moving forward.

Between his last 2 college years (51/132) and his last 2 G-League years (51/135), he shot 102/267 from 3, which is roughly 38.2%. That is a pretty significant sample of strong shooting. Also, he's the older brother of Leonard Miller
