News Project Marvel

I know it also sounds stupid, and shouldn’t have anything to do with it, but I think if the Spurs do well the next couple of weeks it will help a lot. I know three people that were pro arena but didn’t seem terribly motivated to vote who went and voted yes Thursday after wembys big game against dallas
Gonna need wemby to be dominate and for the spurs to win big the next few games.Get sum hype and excitement into the city asap.

This is where they get you. I haven't worked in government planning for a decade and a half, but the cost overruns almost always get shouldered by the tax payers unless a percentage is negotiated in advance. And they intentionally underestimate costs to get things passed. I don't see how a .25% car rental tax will pay what the obligation ends up being.

Early voting, it's not looking good for the new arena. We are notorious for having low voter turnout here which almost always guarantees a win for the opposition. Any local news posting about the propositions 70% of the comments are in opposition of Project Marvel. Just frustrating to say the least.
It's very bad timing. The economy (not stock market) is in free fall. People are worried about their jobs and worried about inflation. People rightfully don't trust the government and expect lies at this point. Then the country is politically on the verge of some form of civil war. Just bad timing to try to force something like this through on a voting public that's struggling financially and pissed off. Had they put this to a vote in the 2024 election it most likely passes.

The vibe is pitiful tbh. So many of the people in this city suffer from self-pity and victim mentality. “I can’t afford tickets to the game, it’s just a playground for billionaires, etc.”

SA lacks go getters that actually care about or understand the importance of economic development for one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

If you’re an adult who can’t afford one or two Spurs games a year, you need to spend some time self-reflecting. The Spurs aren’t the problem. And this project is much deeper than a sports arena.

I don't think this is really about SA, people (on the right and left) are starting to understand the impact of allowing billionaires the basically run the country....and it's not pretty. When a large amount of people in SA can barely afford rent and groceries and the federal and state government is corrupt and broken, it's a tough ask for a very poor city. I am just barely a yes on this bill but I get why people are against it.

Yeah, I realize, but framing it like that sounds like they're underestimating the reader's intelligence. Just say "didn't contribute to economic growth" or something to that effect, which is what you effectively mean. This happens over here too, BTW, probably to an even larger degree.
It's an Op-Ed written by a community group (COPS/Metro). They are definitely spinning things for the story they're trying to tell. I said this before... but I also don't trust any group called COPS.

I get what you’re saying, I agree to an extent. It really isn’t a partisan issue. There’s supporters of Project Marvel from all over the political spectrum.

Being worried about the current political and economic climate is understandable. It still isn’t an excuse to spread misinformation and convince people that their taxes are going to increase.

I agree it is a circus on a macro level and we don’t need the crazy autocratic BS on the local level. The fact is, we will continue to be a poor city if we don’t improve our downtown situation. Downtowns serve a purpose economically and ours suck.

I forgot to ask and if you don’t mind me asking, why are you barely voting yes? What do you believe are the positives that outweigh the negatives?
Exactly. I’ve not heard one solitary cogent argument against Project Marvel. I’d like to hear legitimate reasons for voting against it

You wont be taxed at all for Project Marvel. The funding will come from the Spurs and the rest from taxes on hotels and car rentals. In other words, tourists will foot the bill.
Not true at all. That could possibly be true for the arena, but not the rest of the project. That's why when you hear Holt or anyone with the Spurs they say your local taxes won't be used to fund the arena.

Which, that is also most likely a lie. They haven't disclosed who is paying the cost overruns. That means the city and local taxpayer will. These are always underestimated intentionally to get them passed then extra taxes will pay the overruns. Could also use revenue from increased parking fees at the arena, increased parking fees across the city, and other increase in fees to cover some of it. That's what happened in Arlington.

Not saying you shouldn't vote for it, but the language they use is deceptive and boarding on outright lies. SA should demand better than that. Let the people know the exact amount range they will need to fund and let them decide on truth and honesty.

Because you are believing the outright lies and deception they are feeding you. So of course you dont see a reason.

Certain voters of a crimson persuasion said the same thing. Now look at them and this tanking economy and crumbling country. All because they believed lies without any proof or evidence.

We the people need to educate ourselves better. There are a lot of downsides to funding a full arena and downtown revitalization project at the onset of at best a major economic recession and potentially a prolonged depression.

That’s not remotely true. The Spurs have signed up for $500M in cost over runs.

Read that again. Then go back and read my post before it.

For the ARENA. Project Marvel (stupid name) isnt only the arena. There's a lot more to it that will require hundreds of millions of dollars of tax payer money to fund. Read my previous post again and understand why they say "arena" and not "entirety of the project".

There's no such thing as a free lunch in life. It's a lie. Costs will increase if they find this project and the citizens should be told the truth. There are large financial risks to this project at this time of economic recession and a very uncertain future jobs market in the area.

People should understand the risks before they make the decision. If they still want to take the risk then by all means vote for it. My only problem is the deception and lies used to fool the people into thinking this is zero cost to them and zero risk. It's unethical and a terrible practice.

I worked in government finance for a little less than a decade in DFW and saw these tactics first hand. It doesn’t sit well with me. Thats why I left to a different career.

“The Spurs have pledged $500M AND WILL COVER COST OVERRUNS.” Seems pretty cut and dried to me. I guarantee you that isn’t for the infrastructure part. The Spurs are pledging that money to the arena.

It might help your position if you had done even the slightest amount of research on this instead of airing your past government spending trauma.

Mrs. O. works as an election worker at one of the early voting sites and I needed to drop something off for her today. Turnout appears to be abysmal. I really can't believe how detached from civic participation so many people are.

The businesses around the arena are obvioulsy not owned by the Spurs, so they won't pay for those. Pretty logical. But the arena will bring in more business, more tourists and thus increase tax revenue. A player like LeBron made Cleveland 500 million annually, Wemby will have the same effect on San Antonio. Not investing into developing the city when you have a star like that marketing it, is blatant idiocy.

Question - I don't know much about this stuff, but if the Spurs don't build a new area, could the city lose the Spurs?

all in I’d rather my tax ol

1000%. vegas, and to a lesser extent, seattle are salivating for a new team. money would be on vegas to acquire the spurs if the leave because the losers trying to make SA a low-tier poverty city block real progress.

them leaving to austin would sting a little less but still suck

I'm sure there's an upstart mid-tier city wanting a team too (eg st louis, nasvhille). if a methed out scumbag city like OKC can land a team anything is possible

Don't forget the Wemby factor. If some Qatari assholes throw insanely stupid money at the Spurs ownership to plant the new face of the league and potential GOAT in Vegas, will the owners hold out?

Gotta get that arena built and a long-term lease locked in.
