Wow kinda impressive we fucked up so badly in that draft. Lots of playable players in that draft.View attachment 727
Still hurts, tbh.

Normally I think there would be a lot of validity to this, but I believe the Spurs have built a history of good will with most other franchises and those FOs don't look at it that way. Even someone like Ainge, who has spent his entire career fleecing other FOs, still finds a way to make deals.I'm with you if there's no downside to any theoretical deals, but I'm getting a sense that only shit deals are obtainable right now - and frankly, if I'm a bottom-20 FO, I'd be like, "Fuck those Spurs, lucky assholes."
Let's not blame the accountants when it's the billionaire owners pocketing the cash.If the sticking point on moving Sochan has been that we don't want to have to attach draft capital... then I sure hope Brian Wright has a plan to actually utilize that draft capital. Being unwilling to use SRPs because you plan on selling them later is the least satisfying option for anyone other than the Spurs' accountants.
You're not even really losing that capspace since the MLE is going to be $15 million anyways. So, it would be helpful to trade out the expiring salaries for salaries on the books next year. You will lose that $13MM of cap space to start the summer with, but you'll be able to potentially make trades without sending out one of your core rotation guys.
If Spurs can't find anything better and health checks out (big disclaimer), sign me up. But out for a year with meniscus surgery and setbacks... consider me skeptical.
If you have capspace you'll have the capspace and the Room MLE (projected at $9.5MM next season), so you do lose something. You're not even really losing that capspace since the MLE is going to be $15 million anyways.
Slight correction that... we can split up the cap space or the MLE and sign multiple above-min players... but your point remains the same.for all the people saying "the Spurs don't want to add salary going into next season":
We will only be able to add 2 non-minimum players regardless of what we do at this deadline.
Scenario 1: Spurs operate under the cap
- about 12 million in cap space
-Room exception: 9.5 million
Scenario 2: Spurs operate over the cap
-MLE: around 15.1 million
-BAE: 5.5 million (no we haven't used it this season)
true, but I'd rather throw the whole thing at Rui and John Collins, to see if we might be able to get them for the MLE. And that might be a long shot, cause they could get more on the open market. My third option would be Kelly Oubre.Slight correction that... we can split up the cap space or the MLE and sign multiple above-min players... but your point remains the same.

I'd rather enter this offseason over-the-cap than $13MM under, though.
There was always the Brent Barry for JR Smith dreamOne more hour until we can stop kidding ourselves
how exactly are you upgrading your 8th guy when he makes 3 million dollars? Just curiousThat's totally fine though, because the Spurs have their top 8 guys under contract for next season. If you add a re-signed Barnes that's 9. Bryant is showing progress so he'll need minutes as well. Looks like they'll also have a late lottery first round pick too.
Spurs can't and won't be stockpiling contracts for players without a defined role in the rotation, they will need to look at possible upgrades on the top 8/9 rotation players. Beyond that it makes no sense to take on additional money.
I also blame player development. Whatever the Spurs are doing and the coaches doing it have been extremely underwhelming. These draft picks all made sense at the position they were taken (so not like a Primo situation). Spurs haven't been able to turn them into rotational players.Wow kinda impressive we fucked up so badly in that draft. Lots of playable players in that draft.
They had to get below the luxury line because Watson is up for an extension next summer.
@RC_Drunkford spelled it out quite nicely...Thanks for the explanation
This is a miss, methinks. Spurs could have used Minott. He has rated well on advanced stats this season.
We'll probably be in for a boring summer.@RC_Drunkford spelled it out quite nicely...
Enter with Cap Space:
Enter without Cap Space:
- $13.3MM of cap space (this is what I come up with, but RC comes up with $12MM)
- $9.5MM room exception
I'd rather have the second option, especially since you'd have the ability to make an off-season trade without sending out a core rotation player if you wanted, which you lose in the cap space scenario.
- $15.1MM MLE
- $5.5MM BAE
