Misc NBA Cup Thread

as a reminder, the NBA cup final game against the knicks is treated as an exhibition game

it is not one of our 82 regular season games, does not count toward the standings, players stats do not offiicially count in any capacity

meanwhile, on its face, the cup "screwed" us in that in addition to our 80 originally scheduled games, we had extra games scheduled against 2 of the top teams in the league with the lakers and the thunder. but we won both, so hey!

We get the honor of playing OKC five fucking times.

What's the downside?
Our guys need all the experience they can get and playing OKC is the best way to do it.
I'd rather have them fully focused for 48 minutes against OKC even if we're losing than have them go up by 20 against the Pelicans and start fucking around.

If we can stay healthy we're surely a top6 seed.
Everything else is a bonus this season.
If we're actually aiming to be a legit contender, then we need to try and get a top3 seed to avoid OKC in the second round.

I understand the game not counting for the regular season but not having player stats count is ridiculous...

Would be hard to beat Lakers

Luka and Austin Reeve can easily average 30+ per night with 10+ FT each

Best backcourt in the league tbh. Even LeBum is the 3rd option now
Just circled back on this because it feels so good to prove this statement wrong.

The Spurs have the best backcourt!

Knives are forged in fire. There’s no better than getting them prepared for competition

NY will be a very different kind of test. We almost beat them last Christmas, and are a much improved squad. The Knicks are probably a slightly worse team at this point. Castle and Harper have the strength to absorb Brunson's physical guard play. I wonder if we employ some zone D when Kornet is in the game? We definitely have the chance to win this whole thing if we run the Knicks hard like the Pacers did.

Imagine playing OKC a potential 12 times this season if we face them in the playoffs. We match up as well as anyone with them and that would be so good for getting our shit together to take the next step. I really see Denver as the nightmare for OKC in a 7 game series. PHX seems like our bad matchup.

If the standings is close, one extra loss may matter for home court advantage or difference between playoff and play-in

I get that, but for me the #1 priority is developing our young guys and the best way to do it is through in-game adversity.
Playing the Pelicans or the Nets does very little for their development.

I don't think we'll have to worry about making top6, after that it's not that important, at least not this season.
Let others worry about us.

I disagree. It will be important to be 2 or 3. You defer the match with OKC until the WCFs.

I'm not sure we can get top3 with Wemby's load being managed. And it will be managed.
It’ll be managed for 5-6 games, maybe, but he was playing 33-34 minutes before that asshole for GS rolled up on him.

I'm thinking the matchups will be as follows . . .

Spurs: Barnes - Towns, Kornet - Hart, Vassell - Anunoby, Fox - Bridges, Castle - Brunson

Knicks: Towns - Kornet, Hart - Barnes, Brunson - Vassell, Anunoby - Castle, Bridges - Fox

Can't get away with Barnes playing spot minutes as small ball C vs Robinson's historic offensive rebounding though.

Must go at Brunson to take his legs offensively. Run Vassell/Champagnie off off-ball screens, post Barnes, whatever. Just don't let him hide/rest in the corner.

Last year's Christmas game took an epic Bridges performance to keep up with Wemby.

I didn’t know that the cup finals game did not count for the record nor for stats. Besides the “hype” it’s essentially a pre season game.
I don’t like the idea of our players laying it all out on the floor with potential of injury for a game that doesn’t even count.

Yes, playoff atmosphere, yes experience, yes good for this young team, but I’d much rather be healthy for the games that matter.

IMO, to add to value of this Emirates cup finals game, they should manage a way to make it count both in standings and stats

They made it worth approximately $6.5MM more for the winner than it is for the 2nd place team.
