NBA Cup kicks off this Friday, though the Spurs don't have a cup game until next Friday, the 7th. Spurs are in a tough group including the Nuggets, Rockets, Warriors, and Blazers.
While I obviously always want the Spurs to win every game, this year in particular I'd like to see them succeed as the teams that advance to the final two rounds of the cup have those games played here in Vegas, where I'd be able to theoretically catch the Spurs locally... so here's hoping!
The Spurs cup schedule is as follows:
Rockets @ Spurs - Friday, November 7
Warriors @ Spurs - Friday, November 14
Spurs @ Blazers - Friday, November 21
Spurs @ Nuggets - Friday, November 28
As a reminder for how the cup works, there are a total of 6 such groups. The winner of each group, and then the top two other wild card teams (one from each conference) advance to the knockout stage of the cup. Last year, 4 of the 6 group winners went 3-1 in group play, with 2 of the group winners going undefeated. Points differential plays a huge deal here, because naturally with only 4 games, there will be be a LOT of tiebreak scenarios, and the top 2 tiebreaks are point differential during cup play, and points scored during cup play.
Teams that advance from group stage into the knockout round then play a single elimination "quarter-finals" game. The 4 winners advance to the neutral site (Vegas) games for the semi finals, and ultimately, the finals.
To eliminate any confusion, as it relates to the regular standings, all NBA cup games except the finals game count as typical regular season games as far as standings are concerned. The championship game itself does NOT count as a regular season game. It does not affect standings, and even player statistics from that game do not officially count for any purpose. It's an exhibition game. It's an uncounted 83rd game. But the players are competing for a prize pool.
