Yea, Mitch has said in interview that they decided that it was best for Sochan to be released so that he can join another team and get playing time as this is his contract year. He is not in Mitch's rotation and will only rot at the bench unless there are serious injuries to few players. If Spurs had kept him to end of season and playoffs, Sochan will just pile up DNPs and that will hurt his contract nego with other teams in the off-season.

Once trade deadline has passed and MATFO were unable to get any deal and returns for Sochan, it is already a 'sunk cost loss' to the organisation (as unable to get any returns like second round pick etc) and hence do Sochan a solid by releasing the young 22 years old player to try shine with other team and play for his bag.

I doubt the Spurs will waive Biyombo this season, but if there was ever a chance it would be for Pop's favorite player Mason Plumlee.

Interesting. Plumlee standing up to Adams. He's not soft.

Not sure what I think about this signing. Was more preferring someone like Love if he's bought out.
 
If Spurs decides to keep Plumlee for the rest of the season, they will have 5 centers on the roster. As a consequence, they won't have a lot of depth at other spots, especially with Waters having knee issues and not being good to begin with.

If Plumlee is good, he should be kept and get the 3rd string center job. Spurs should then waive one of Biyombo or Olynyk to sign another player.

Yeah, they can't keep all of those guys. I like both Kelly and Lindy (both seem great guys), but they have to probably get rid of one of them (What would you say about letting Waters go?). Bismack, I'd normally say should be the first to go, but it seems Victor likes him, and if Victor wants him there, I guess they'll have to waive somebody else.

The whole Spurs 3rd string unit is quite bad to be honest. I don't trust McLaughlin, Waters, Olynyk or Biyombo to give Spurs 5 or 10 solid minutes in a playoff game if needed because of injuries or foul troubles. I wouldn't care if all 4 are cut. McLaughlin is maybe the less worst of the bunch but he's nothing special.

Spurs don't need to be 15 players deep, the issue is that they are 10 players deep. It would be nice if they could enter the playoffs with a couple more of quite good players on their roster.

Well, now that you mention it, you're right. Someone during the Allstar weekend said Stephon said that he doesn't see any teams that can beat us 4 times in a series, but when I heard that comment, I was actually thinking about the role players not stepping up in the playoffs. I think you're right. I do not trust any of those guys to step in, so I would also be more than OK getting rid of all of them if there were better options available.

You still need someone that can step in if someone is in foul trouble, injured, or just needs to play minutes for whatever reason. You need someone that you can rely on, that has a hope of contributing. I can't think of many example off the top of my head from previous Spurs Championship teams (there is, but I'm blanking and can't remember them).

Edit : I can remember one (can't remember the scenario on why he had to step in - if it was injury, foul trouble, I can't remember), and that's also from 2003 (a season I keep thinking back to as this team has some similar traits to that team) where Steve Kerr stepped in off the bench and had a huge game in Dallas (game 6 I think it was) that helped the Spurs win the game and the series. He was gigantic for the Spurs in the second half as TD was getting double teamed and the team went on a roll with Steve Kerr and SJax hitting big shots.

Solid 3rd Center, break glass in case of emergency.
A few years ago I thought he was a potential Wemby backup but he's getting older now.
Nothing to get excited about, but you want veterans like this at the end of the bench when contending for a title.

If Waters health looks like an ongoing issue I'd be ready to waive him and work with a vet on another team behind the scenes like @Chinook suggested. As for our Plumdog Millionaire, I like him better than Bismack or Olynyk, so waive one (preferably Bismack) or both. In the case of both sign a G league guy on a contract with team options.
 
He's probably mostly washed up given that he's what 36 and out of the league, but he's either a step up from our other two backup backup centers or we're just rapidly collecting more of the same. Fingers crossed.

If we end up keeping Plumlee it will be wild that we've using 3 roster spots to try and fill the 3rd string C position

Especially since the general consensus is that the center position has been phased out.

But yeah, right now if Wemby or Korndog can't play, things start to get ugly real quick.
 
Calling it now, he's gonna give us some crucial minutes in a playoff game and be the difference maker. I've always liked Plumdog, he's an old dog, but doesn't need to learn any new tricks.

Also very welcome to have more real vets on the team as we gear up for our first playoff run in forever.
