Draft March Madness Draft Watch: Spurs Prospect Tracker

I don't mind saying Mara is better than Krivas. My issue with Krivas this game is his hands don't seem that great. Bobbling rebounds and stuff.

Lendeborg injured, but I did see him return from a similar situation in the AAC tourney last year.

Michigan absolutely destroying Arizona. Were up by 30 pts. Total domination. Didn’t see this coming.

Koa Peat has been terrible too. 4-15 from the field. He’s just way too small for Michigan’s frontline. He’s undersized for an NBA PF and games like this show why I want nothing to do with him, along with the fact that he can’t shoot the 3 at all.

On the flip side, Mara has been dominant defensively. He’s definitely slow-footed and will likely struggle to defend in space at the next level, but his size and length near the rim are just make him so disruptive in the middle.

Very impressive performance by Mara on just about every aspect. Guy has been unstoppable today.

Also, my interest in Morez is dwindling. I think he has a future in the NBA, but not being a good enough rim protector for the 5 and not having the offensive skill-set to play the 4 takes a lot of the appeal.

Mara may even go into the lottery. There's a ton of guards, but not everyone needs guards. Crazy draft. I'm not in love with the top three guys but the list of players keeps going and going.

I was trying to justify during the Spurs game that it’d be a nice luxury to have a solid backup center to sub in when Kornet’s playing soft. But realistically, that only matters in the regular season. If Wemby is playing 30+ minutes in games like today, that leaves about 18 minutes to split between Kornet and a third center, which limits how impactful that role really is.

That’s why, at minimum, any center you bring in has to have some pathway to playing PF. They need shooting ability or real shooting upside, plus enough mobility to defend in space. Otherwise, they’re just competing for a small, low-impact slice of minutes.

That’s also why Quaintance has moved up my board. I liked what I saw. He fits more of that mold, and I’ll put together a full write-up on him later.

Actually, the other reason to have a third, talented center is for if Wemby goes down and has to miss games in the playoffs and you need a “break glass in case of emergency” type center who can sub in and help the team keep afloat.

Guess koa peat gonne be the guy we draft...Hes probably gonna drop to us.Which i wont be to happy if we take him.

At that point it’s season over anyway. I agree with your previous post more

I think the more interesting thing for our draft position is is there a back up big that’s gonna be better than Kornet in his sophomore season?

That was the reason behind my interest in Morez, I wanted a primary 4 who could log 3rd string minutes at 5. With Quaintance the problem is that he guy damn near literally blew up his knee (ACL, meniscus, fracture) and has suffered swelling. His impact is so dependent on mobility and athleticism that I shudder to think about it, but I would defer to the Spurs docs on this if they take him, they have the info and a proven track record of being careful and thorough.

I will say this: with the pick tanking, my interest has shifted to getting the best player possible. If it's also a great fit then awesome, if not I'd rather take someone I trust will be a good pro and deal with it later (center like Mara, guard like Philon). My long term faith in Kornet took a hit in the last couple of months.

We’d all like to think it’s easy and apply a best case scenario to all the bigs coming out of the draft when they haven’t stepped a foot in the NBA but…

Reality is, we’ve gone through these bigs:
Jock Landale
Zach Collins
Charles Bassey
Drew Eubanks

Before we got Kornet. And as much as we shit on Kornet, he’s still miles better than these guys even though some of them eventually carved out a career post-Spurs.

IMO, a lot of the centers in this draft remind me of Charles Bassey. Brute strength, interior based bigs - like Morez and Ngongba.

I think the Spurs would have kept Landale or give him another shot. They had to throw him into the Dejounte trade.

True tbh. As much as people shit on Korndog recently still so hard to find a would be replacement

UCONN has to play like John Wick is waiting in the locker room to assassinate them if they don’t win. Michigan is just way more talented than them. They need to work twice as hard.

UConn scrappy but will need some 3s to fall.

They don't have any ball handlers to bring ball up the court.

I know I've joked LendeBron a bunch, but Yaxel really does fit a similar archetype.

Still can't believe Duke choked so hard against UConn. Duke vs Michigan would've been an epic matchup. And Duke very well might have won.
