While I agree with the fact that McDaniels is probably that player that can get the spurs over the hump, I disagree with trying to meet the likely asking price (3 FRP) for McDaniels. That's interesting because I think the Spurs are firmly in or right on the edge of "overpay for player that could put you over the hump" that every championship level team has to eventually make to seriously compete for a championship. I also think McDaniels would easily be that player and really fits to how we want to play. Or should want to play you never know with Mitch
Denver did it for Gordon....
OKC did it for IHart...
Celtics did it for White and Jrue...
Knicks did it for Bridges...made the CF...
Depending on how you feel about the player and contract Houston is doing it right now for KD...
Really the only maybe championship level teams that haven't done it are Detroit and San Antonio...but history has shown you don't win a chip without the "paid to much for this player but in this very specific circumstance he makes you a real championship contender" player. Spurs aren't winning anything of note without a real power forward. We don't have one right now and who knows how long it takes Carter Bryant to be one...if it ever happens.
I think the key similarity between Denver, OKC, and Boston acquisitions is that they gave up marginal or no draft capital to get their guy:
Denver gave up a 2025 protected FRP for Gordon
Celtics gave up a 2022 FRP, 2028 swap, and Romeo Langford for White
OKC gave up zero assets for IHart
In Denver and Celtics' cases, they were giving up fewer assets to take a guy who was miscast as a poor 1st/2nd option where he looked bad and putting him in situation where he was a 3rd option and looked better - this allowed them to pay less than true market value for their acquisition. In the Spurs case, they'd be taking McDaniels who's performing well as a 3rd/4th option and putting him in the exact same role with the Spurs, so they'd in actuality be paying true market value for him.
I would argue that the Knicks trade for Bridges and Orlando's trade for Bane are going to age extremely poorly as time goes on
Certainly, if the Spurs can get McDaniels for like Vassell and a protected pick or something, I'm all for that. But I think the asking price from the Wolves is going to be way too high to make it worth it.
