Anybody still uses the ancient media of books?

Just finished reading Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by stephanie land. It’s about a biographic view of the authors experience living below the poverty line, and the difficulty of getting out of poverty despite all the work she does.

Some parts could be repetitive and boring, and there are certainly parts where I read it and felt there were poor decisions made that led to where she’s at, and it is most definitely written from her own point of view and I wonder what the people on the other side thinks, but it does clearly highlight the issue of social support in the US, and how poor people are being unfairly discriminated against.

Not sure if this counts as political talks but if so please feel free to delete.

I also read two books by Timothy Snyder, on freedom and on tyranny. Probably way more political so not going to delve too much in them.

Just ordered Kirk Goldsberry's books and Shea Serrano's "Expensive Basketball"

Unfortunately every book I've read in the last two years had some connection to work, so no novels in a while. But I definitely prefer actually turning the pages, crimping the corners of the passages you want to go back to, and appreciating holding the actual paper in your hands.

For some reason reading a printed book for 3 hours versus staring at a screen makes me a lot less tired...and I tend to retain a lot more of what I just read.

This is so good.

And thats the worst book of the series, by a decent margin.

Fwiw, Martian Reds are the descended form Irish survivors who'd fled the Isles after the events of WW III because they were rendered radioactive. Hence the choice of accent for the AB reader.
Just finished Golden Son. Really enjoyable series... I'm just a slow reader :st-lol:

Got a round trip to the mainland (5.5 hours each way) and Japan (9 hours each way) coming up... expecting to really get caught up

Nice!

Props on you for being able to wait to start MS after reading that banger of an ending in GS. I remember immediately buying MS that same day despite having originally planned to read something else in between the two books lol.

Oh, I started MS the next night :st-lol:

I bought my wife physical copies of the entire series after she finished Golden Son because she liked the first two so much. She just finished whatever Book 4 is so I'm a bit behind her... but she's a 75 books/year kind of reader where I am more a 6-10/year kind of guy.

I bought a physical copy of The Satanic Verses by Salmon Rushdie. I remember it being very controversial in my childhood. Looking forward to opening it and instigating Armageddon.

Just finished Morning Star. Gonna fit in a few other books before I start on the second trilogy, but I really enjoyed this one even though I did find some things a little predictable. I also ordered the Artist Edition RR for my wife for XMas, she’ll love it.

I was thinking about a movie or TV adaptation of the show and I actually think it would be better as a Video Game with God of War style gameplay.

Yeah, MS is below GS on my personal rankings of the series.

Taking a break between MS & IG is def the right call. Not only is there a 10 yr time jump, but we also get 3 new PoVs. These changes can seem a bit jarring if you're jumping straight into IG after MS.

The special editions are straight fire. I hope PB does them for the sequels as well.

There was a live action TV adaptation in pre-production hell for years. It initially got delayed during COVID, then delayed again because of writer strikes and finally axed for good during this economic downturn as the 1st season alone was looking at a 150~ million budget according to PB. But there are other studios circling the IP, so....

Yeah I rated MS the worst of the 3 in the first trilogy. I know you said (and I’ve heard this from others) that RR was the worst book of the series, but I really liked it - kind of a hunger games meets God of War sort of thing… whereas MS started to feel kind of Dune-inspired to me. GS was almost perfect.

Wife is in the middle of book 5 right now. I’m sure she’d love me to catch up but I’ll probably wait until my trip to Japan at the end of April before I pick up IG

@Lefty20 now that I have been getting into this and ordered my wife the Artist Edition, I finally know where your avatar is from :st-lol:

Haha, yup. This is my favorite book series. I've also got a tattoo of the Gold & Red sigil combo on the forearm.

There are other series like First Law, Dark Tower & RoTE that come close to RR for me, but something about the way PB writes simply speaks to my soul and that sets this series apart.

Nice. I'm about 20% into Iron Gold right now. When I get done with all of these I'll hit you up for some recommendations! Though I want to probably give the Dungeon Crawler Carl series a go next.

IG start off a lil slow, but you are in for a treat with the back half of the series. PB really levels up as a writer.

DCC is fantastic. Easily the standard bearer of LitRPG genre, no contest. If you can, the audiobooks would be the best way to absorb DCC. It really does bring the world to life.

But yeah, I got plenty of other recommendations ranging across all sci-fi/fantasy genres so hit me up anytime.

I think you recommended the Dramatized versions of the RR audio books... I've been listening to those for IG in the car and then reading the same chapters at night so that it especially absorbs. I'm only about 20% in, but I'm digging it. The background on Ephraim and what Lysander has been up to are interesting to me... so not as much problem getting into IG, I actually had a little more trouble starting Morning Star. Anyway... so far so good!
