Now you are leaving from Hawaii so it won't be as long as my last trip to Japan from Austin, Texas. When I got there everyone was magnicicent to me and I was complimenting everything I ate. Some asked me "You don't have Japanese restaurants in Austin?" I said,"Sure we have sushi and steak teriyaki" They said "Oh teriyaki...Hawaiian!"Nice, you'll be golden. It has been years since I've been on a Hawaiian flight where the WiFi wasn't working, other than interisland flights on their old planes. Knocking on all the wood for you.
I've got a roundtrip to Japan coming up in two weeks where I am HOPING we don't have a game during my flight, because I don't want to risk it... but it's on Hawaiian so I feel a little more comfort.
I like to do road trips with my family for vacation (because we can't road trip in Hawaii), and a few years ago we drove from the Canadian border down to NorCal. It was then I learned that in addition to being a Hawaii thing (brought by Japanese immigrants) teriyaki is also specifically a Seattle thing. In the 70s a bunch of "Teriyaki" restaurants started opening in Seattle and then in the 90s it really exploded apparently. I had to look this up because I was wondering why there were so many teriyaki restaurants everywhere I turned in Seattle!Now you are leaving from Hawaii so it won't be as long as my last trip to Japan from Austin, Texas. Great info! Now I know about teriyaki! As for Japan, I've been blessed to have traveled a lot in life, but my sole trip to Japan was something I'll never forget. My hosts were just unreal, when I was leaving I told them I'd probably cry at the airport...think I did indeed haha.That 'honor thing' is for real there and the bowing means something. Gotta go back. I love Japan, this will be my second trip. It's just so easy to get to from me, and my friends back in Texas know that when we plan a guys trip, that if they pick somewhere that is harder to get to than Japan for me... I'm not going!![]()
At least bring back some jukujo pantsuI'm in my 40s... earning CC points is more important than the boobs of strangers to me at this point![]()
I googled Soaplands at work the first time you brought it up... I'm not making the same mistake twiceAt least bring back some jukujo pantsu
We need to use that free travel ticket before they turn two.
This is where kanji knowledge helps:I googled Soaplands at work the first time you brought it up... I'm not making the same mistake twice
Honestly, I've found learning Japanese for the most part not as difficult as Spanish... but its the Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji... this dog is just too old for those new tricks.This is where kanji knowledge helps:
熟女= jukujo
熟 = something like ripened
女 = woman
So 熟女= jukujo = ripened woman = MILF
pantsu is easy, it's just a loanword for panties. Japan loves American loanwords.
Can't agree at all, Japanese is a super high context language to the point subjects and objects are often omitted which makes sentences really confusing until you just start getting used to the language. Pronouns usually have to be omitted too or it sounds like you're talking about how great you are or insulting someone else. You have to use maybe or perhaps for things that are certain. Particles are a part of Japanese grammar that have no English analog whatsoever and serve the function word order does in English. Even worse they have different nuances like the は particle can sometimes make a sentence sound really negative or dismissive when you think you're just using は to flag the topic. You're expected to beat around the bush instead of talking directly. Then just like English you can never know how a word is pronounced the first time you see it by reading since you don't know if it's using a Chinese reading (and which one) or a Japanese reading (and which one) of a specific kanji for example. The words often have unfamiliar Chinese roots vs Spanish words having Latin roots that are much more easily recognized for native English speakers. And even the English loanwords are a pain the first time you come across them. Like ホーム = homu pronounced like home isn't someone's house, it's the platform you wait for the train on. Or the first time I came across the word ペーパードライバー = pepa doraiba = paper driver in a Persona game I was thinking WTF is that and it means someone who has his license but no experience and thus can't drive for shit. Then there's politeness levels. Using the wrong politeness level is basically the way you curse someone out in Japanese, though as a white boy no one in Japan will expect you to understand politeness levels. The only thing that makes Japanese reasonably learnable for people in the west is how much media there is for it, e.g. you could blast through a bunch of Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy games in Japanese and greatly increase your level of understanding. But the US state department considers it the single hardest major language for English native speakers to learn.Honestly, I've found learning Japanese for the most part not as difficult as Spanish... but its the Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji... this dog is just too old for those new tricks.
I should add... I'm only learning enough Japanese to be a courteous visitor and not the typical dumb American who expects everyone to be able to cater to my language. So... like... basic duo lingo shitCan't agree at all, Japanese is a super high context language to the point subjects and objects are often omitted which makes sentences really confusing until you just start getting used to the language. Only speaking, not reading or writing. Anytime we get into different characters, I'm automatically going to fail because I'll be honest up front I'm not going to learn any of that shit.Sounds awesome just make sure to send all of us some CoCo's CurryNice, you'll be golden. Honestly might be useful to learn katakana. You can learn it in a weekend, and it's how almost all non-Chinese loanwords are written. Like if you see a flag with the word ラーメン you know it's a ramen shop (ラ for 'ra', ー for extending the vowel, メ for 'me', and ン for 'n'). Which is kind of funny that this one is a Chinese loanword lol.I should add... I'm just gonna stick with my Google Translate app for reading things, tbhHonestly might be useful to learn katakana. I just hope there's none on Peecock that aren't on regular NBC, as Prime is at least a decent service. Peecock though? How many times can I watch The Office? NBC has been a mostly awful network this century.The amount of playoff games on Amazon prime is unreal. I really do not want to pay for another streaming service.
But prime mostly get the shittiest games like sixers, hornets , hawks, heat, nuggets, raptors.The amount of playoff games on Amazon prime is unreal. I really do not want to pay for another streaming service.

Have done JAL J before - epic stuff. I really want to do ANA’s A380 in F… just gotta find the redemption at the right time!No JAL F? or J?![]()
Never have been to Japan but definitely will fly J or that ANA. Super competitive on awards. Trying to convince my wife to take a week out that way (even w/ our 10 yr old)Have done JAL J before - epic stuff. I really want to do ANA’s A380 in F… just gotta find the redemption at the right time!
This one was less than $500 RT and I’ll get upgraded to Premium bc of my status and I’m curious if I get bumped to Business or not. HA used to have a weird upgrade system but since the merger with AS completed I’ve been upgraded on every HA flight I’ve been on!
But, for under $500 RT I’m more than happy to ride in back with the workin’ folks!
I did do a redemption for the Park Hyatt Shinjuku tho![]()
My wife is taking our girls (15, 10) to Japan separately with her mom this summer. It’s probably the place I’d feel most comfortable with them going at this age!Never have been to Japan but definitely will fly J or that ANA. Super competitive on awards. Trying to convince my wife to take a week out that way (even w/ our 10 yr old). She’s too comfortable going to Europe.
