Hello everyone!
I'm not much of a thread-starter, but would like to contribute what I can to make this forum feel a bit more like "home" for those of us who've perused Spurstalk for many years now (I'm guessing most, if not all, of you?). When life throws change our way, the transition is often painful, but grabbing a hold of whatever things dear to us - no matter how small - can make the process easier, and I'm on that mission today.
One feature of Spurstalk that I much enjoyed was its custom Emotes/Smileys system, with its aggressively old-school style, an eternal rejection of the modern Emoji system and standarization, which this forum defaults to (like every single app you write a smiley face on nowadays). When the forum went down, I realized I had never taken a chance to cache or save any of the emotes, and feared it was lost media forever.
Thankfully, the site is now once again active - and this time, I was prepared.
The general URL link for the Spurstalk Smiley full list is the following: http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/misc.php?do=getsmilies&editorid=vB_Editor_QR .
I have taken the opportunity to save this page forever through the Wayback Machine - first time ever for this particular corner of the internet!
We can now eternally refer back to the original Smiley List through this Wayback Machine link.
Now, obviously, securing a historical archive record of the Emotes is far from a finished job. Through the use of browser extensions (DownThemAll), I've downloaded the 120-something GIF files that compose each emote, and I'm currently in the process of compiling and parsing a complete database/list of each smiley to be Imported into this new forum (so that we can ideally keep the syntax intact, like ":cry" for example).
I'm creating the thread to raise awareness about this small, but IMO very significant project, and document its developments. Hopefully the importing process is as easy as my Google-Fu lends me to believe (and it's notable to mention that the modern architecture of XenForo, the forum hosting service, makes this process very easy when compared to Spurstalk's ancient system).
Hopefully we can shoot the classic Emotes at each other very soon..... But for now, please accept an emoji, instead
