Player The restricted-age video store section of Dylan Harper

He was great last night, it was against a depleted Sixers team but the talent is just undeniable.

Hoping he gets even more reps before the playoffs begin, Fox could use a breather or two. Him and Castle on the court is a tremendous combo of Defense Into Offense, Harper looks great navigating screens on the perimeter, while Castle takes the more physical matchup. Not to mention "righty vs lefty", makes for a very versatile attack combo.

setting up for a "his best season was his rookie year"
Kon's shooting is at an elite level. 100% respect from me. We'll see how he goes in other years, but as a rookie, that makes it even more impressive to me. Not saying I'd ever pick him ahead of Harper, but I probably blow that pick if the Spurs had a later pick and he was still on the board, I likely would have passed him up and would have been wrong if I were in control of the pick. Props to all the guys here that said he was legit during the draft.

The two biggest determinants of Harper’s ceiling will be his ability to get to the FT line and developing a solid jumper. I view it like this:

- If he doesn’t do either of those things (what we’re seeing now), he’s probably still fringe all-star caliber or 6MOTY type guy.

- If he checks one of those boxes, he’s pretty much a lock to be an all-star. I view this outcome as far and away the most likely…he already should be getting to the line way more than he has - refs just aren’t respecting him yet IMO. Given his skillset and what we’ve seen thus far, it’s really hard to imagine him not being a high-FT rate player.

- If he ends up being proficient in both areas, the sky is the limit tbh. Almost certainly going to be all-NBA caliber if he’s getting to the FT line 7-8 times a game + shooting 38% or something from 3 on decent volume.

Couldn’t be more excited about having this kid next to Wemby.

Disagree tbh. We have enough data to show that Kon is clearly on his way to being an elite shooter with a lot more playmaking / on ball juice than folks were crediting him for coming out of Duke.

I'd still take Harper going forward and wouldn't trade him for anybody in his class outside of Flagg. But I'm like 99% sure that Kon isn't Tyrke Evans/MCW. And if you told me in 3-4 years, you'd rather have Kon than Dylan, I wouldn't be too surprised.

Pretty special draft class and it's crazy to think that the '26 class might surpass it.

38% and 8 FTs are MVP numbers, not just all-NBA.
Prime Harden was at ~37% and ~10 FTA.

Cade is in MVP conversations with 32% 3PT and 6.6 FTA.
This is ignoring quite a bit of context.

Prime Harden is one of the highest usage guards we've ever seen...even if Harper hits his ceiling in terms of development he's not going to be getting that sort of usage playing next to Wemby. Harden shooting 37% from 3 isn't the key component of his MVP-caliber seasons; the thing that separated him was doing that while taking >10 3s per game + >10 FTA per game.

Harper shooting 38% on 5-6 3PA per game + getting 7-8 FTA per game is likely not going to be comparable to prime Harden's seasons :st-lol:

For Cade: I'll be honest, I don't think he's having an MVP-caliber season at all. He'd be the weakest MVP we've had in a very long time. People are just putting way too much stock into Detroit's team record. It's sort of like Derrick Rose's MVP year, except I don't think Cade is even on that level.

Regardless, I think we agree on the larger point: if Harper continues to do all of the things he's been doing plus starts getting to the FT line at a high rate (pretty likely IMO) plus develops a reliable 3-point shot (more up in the air)...then the league better watch out.

Kon is terrific. There's no need to disrespect his game when comparing him to Harper.

That said, I'm pretty sure that there's not a single basketball person with any knowledge whatsoever who suggested that anybody should take Kon at two. There are times that his game would fit the Spurs better than Harper's game does at this moment, but it would never have been a sensible pick.

We did talk at the time about potentially trading down to get someone who might be a better fit, but the talent gap was way too much to pick anyone else at two.

There was a dude who used to play for UTEP many years ago whose nickname was Jeep, because he could get anywhere. Different play styles but reminds me of Harper - his handles and shiftiness are so good he gets anywhere on the court.

Really need Harper and Castle to get their 3pt percentage up next year, so all 3 pg's can close out games. He has too much talent to be sitting on the bench a majority of the time. Hard to take Dev and Champ out since they're our floor spacers. And Mitch isn't going to take out Fox or Castle unless they're having a really bad game. Great problem to have, I know, but would hate to see the kid have to wait 3 or 4 years to get starter minutes.

He's obviously an awesome player, but i'm getting a little worried about the lack of above average passing

By a teenager... off the bench... with a birthday in March... and named Dylan ... in NBA history.
