Breakdown of the underrated Defense of Harper....

His defense is really surprising tbh....his scouting from college didn't really mention his defense as anything notable....but at nba level, he really play smart D, don't gamble and has the quickness to stay in front of his assignment

Hard to scout defense on troll teams like Rutgers in college

The reality is, you draft the highest talent, and that’s Harper. Kon is great, but tops out at elite role player. He’s not talented enough to get his own shot more than occasionally. He needs picks, and pinpoint passing to set him up.

You can get three point shooters on the open market.
i mean... Kon kind of already IS an elite role player as a rookie. hes averaging 19/5.5/3.5 on 49/43/89 splits while being a respectable defender as well. he leads the NBA in 3PM for the season, so his efficiency is not being inflated by selective shots on low volume

his rookie numberse are already on par with Klay's career averages

and look, the better Kon is, the more wrong i'd have been on him during the draft, so its not like im pumping him up here to prove i was right about him all along :st-lol:

his shtick is fun and games while he is here and happy. might wear thin in the future tbh
I agree. Initially wasn't too comfortable with drafting another player with a meddlesome relative, and while I still don't like Harper Sr., I have to say watching Dylan's demeanor is reassuring. He seems like a genuinely good kid, with the right mindset, hardworking, humble, appreciative. The Spurs have built a great core around Wemby, all high character kids and vets, and winning cures a lot of ego issues. My guess is, as long as the Spurs are realistic about his path forward (let's be realistic, there's only one Manu that will accept coming off the bench consistently as a star), I'm optimistic they can thread the needle and move Fox when he's ready to take over (say, in a couple of years).

Also, don't forget, Ron Harper is kind of a pain in the ass of a parent, but he's a champion. He's a winner. He understands what it means to be a champion and a winner, and he knows that he's not going to be the person to interfere with that.

I imagine if we drafted Kon then not many, if any, would say, "man I wished we drafted Harper." But I get it. One thing is for sure, Kon is just as legit.

Said it before...

Harper's ceiling will be "the system" (per Harden, an on ball creator and scorer) which is the most rare type of player.

Kon's ceiling will be "Elite shooter that can catch fire" (Klay) who need "system" to feed him the ball. Unless, he miraculously turn into an elite 1 on 1 player like Nephew....it should always be system player is more valuable.

Harden was the worst player you could've compared him to lol...Great player. Never won anything being the system. And make no mistake, Vic is the engine. And if Castle improves his 3, he's the backup engine. Why you just want to put Harper ahead of them is quite puzzling to me but maybe it makes sense to you. Idk.

And the strength and body control to bump with power players with the mental habits to forget mistakes and just keep coming back.

Put Kon on our team and he'd have a third less FGA game and his 3PAr goes from it's current .591 to looking more like Champ's .766... in other words, he'd be used completely differently and Dylan would be averaging 20ppg in CHA and the narrative would be "wow still can't believe the Spurs passed on Dylan Harper to take Kon Knueppel"

The ceiling for Harper if his 3p shooting comes around could be Harden plus defense...which is a winning proposition unlike the Beard who shrivels in the big stage every year because of being an one-way player.

The ceiling for Kon is of course Klay with not the same defensive chops that Klay had during his peak.

Can we get this printed out and framed near the forum water cooler?

Harper's D is really stout, especially for a rookie. I can recall his dad defending Jordan very well and being tough on D especially pre-knee injury. Having a tall guard with defensive tenacity, All-Star and championship pedigree as your dad doesn't hurt. Dylan is obviously his own man and cringed so hard when his dad made off-color remarks about LeBron ASG weekend. The Castle/Harper defensive pairing is a nightmare for most backcourts of the NBA. I wonder if the Spurs were aware that his defensive potential is this high. Having 3 guards who can pretty much get into the paint at will along with our amazing Alien is an offensive assault most teams can't counter.

Vassell is on him early and often when he makes mistakes. Very cool to see. Harper must be his rookie. Harper still reacts a little too hard and his body language really dips. Learning to keep playing and have a short memory is the next step of his maturation in my eyes. Castle can seem pissed but keeps moving forward very well. I hope Dylan can adopt this trait.

I'd be interested in seeing how Harper and Harden compare as rookies. James had to have been a much better 3point shooter.

Ron has obviously been to a few games, but has Maria been spotted at any? Would think she'd be at these BKN and NYC games at a minimum?

I've wondered the same thing. Maybe she wants to keep a lower profile or her own coaching is keeping her away?

I don’t see harden being Harper’s comp. I understand the stylistic similarities (lefty big lead guard) but Harden is more 3 and foul dependent while Harper has more moves around the basket (not better just more variety).

Harden is also much more ball dominant where he pass to get the assist hope Harper is more about facilitating movement.

I still see Harper as a big lefty Brandon Roy with more passing and less scoring

Agreed. He ducks his head and shrugs his shoulders for a couple seconds when he gets beat or makes a bad play. He'll learn to snap back faster and not let other players know he's bothered by his mistakes and bad plays.

I don't want to denigrate Kon, because he's really good, but Harper is going to be a fucking monster.
