Player The restricted-age video store section of Dylan Harper

Very impressive start.
The ball handling is elite.
I like him hitting the spot up 3. That’s going to be important if he can keep it up. I mentioned pre-draft that his spot up 3% was solid enough in college to make me think he can potentially start next to Fox at some point.
At Rutgers his overall 3 point percentage was 33.3%. But his catch and shoot 3 point percentage was 38.2%. I would imagine that the coaching staff will have him shooting almost exclusively catch and shoot 3s for his first few years. Either way, I can’t wait to watch him.

If his step up from summer league to here isn't a blip, then Harper's processing seems to be next level. His ability to play at game speed is fairly astonishing. You may see a Castle/JC rotation at small forward soon if Harper and Fox mesh. Seems kind if crazy to even think about a starting role for a kid this young, but the Spurs have done it before.

Harper reminds me of Dwyane Wade. Is that crazy?

Ws are still in preseason and making comparisons with Spurs all time greats on actual play is foolhardy.

But in terms of potential, Harper and Castle can look upto TP and Manu in the way they shaped themselves up for success.

I feel he is a lot like Harden. Maybe because they are lefty.

The thing for me is his fearlessness. Seems to be very Kawhi Leonard in his approach to the game. The skills and size aren't going anywhere, and the mentality of just playing his game regardless of the opponent is really impressive.

I see more Cade than Wade, who I see a lot of in Castle.

TP was the fastest player I’ve ever seen dribble a basketball ever. There are faster players than TP but I’ve never seen someone be able to dribble the ball at full speed like Tony did. He was a one man fast break who cooked GP as a rookie.

Harper is more crafty and shifty with the basketball. He just doesn’t have that TP speed and tbh he is slower than Fox too. But that’s ok bc I see Harper’s style more along the lines of Gino than TP
Fox is the fastest player I’ve ever seen dribble. Is TP considered ahead?

Spurs fans celebrate a player without ripping down other Spurs players challenge: impossible
It's not "ripping down" Castle to say that Harper might be better :st-lol:

It's an internet forum meant for discussing Spurs basketball. Don't see the problem with comparing two players and talking about who might be better or more suited to be in the starting lineup...especially two players that are both around the same age and play similar positions.

Obviously the old TP/Manu debates escalated into something far beyond that lol but I haven't really seen anybody here talking negatively about Castle. It's not like people in here are going around talking about Castle being overrated, Castle being a scrub, Castle needing to get traded, etc etc.

Someone actually said that we should trade him while his value is high, coming off the RoY season.

Exactly my point, man. Why the hell do you have to bring up another player to build up someone? That's just mental, man, and I'm not kidding. Castle has played a single season, Harper has barely played. Why can't you enjoy both of them without doing this dumbass ripping on them shit?

i dont think its likely, but its possible that this represents the peak of his value
Doubtful. Rookies are nearly always inefficient and losing Wemby as the focus after the ASG didn’t help that. I kind of look for everyone under the age of, say, 25 to have a bump in efficiency. Vic is kind of looking like he wants to be Slender Jokic.

I’m giddy thinking of Steph Castle getting, at most, the third most attention from the defense.

thats why i said its unlikely

the fun thing about castle is that we don’t need him to develop into anything. If he’s never going to get his jumper down…fine. We have cost control and an upgrade to Jones. If he becomes all-nba? Sounds good. Anything in between? Ok.

He’s gonna be a solid pro and he’s sort of an adrenaline rush a lot of the time so I’m firmly in the “castle is here to be enjoyed and should stay here” camp.

Can we just pull a 1997 Phoenix Suns and start Harper alongside Fox and Castle? Just run the fuck out the ball and have Wemby swat stuff on the inside. I’d take my chances with that line up
I dig it. But, then our bench guards would blow

I love Harper starting off as a 6th man and potential best backup PG in the league. That will be a great way to acclimate to the NBA game and get some minutes with Fox or Castle. His defense is looking better than I expected. Loved him getting a shot in the face from Keynote George and then picking him up full court for the rest of the game. I also love his IQ. We have gone from Oklahoma to MENSA in our collective Bball IQ with the additions of Kornet, KO, Fox, Harper and even Bryant. I think KJ and Vassell will do much better with headier players.

Harper is definitely a star in the making, can't wait to watch him ascend!
