Player The Methodical Meritocracy of Maestro Mitch Johnson and his Many Minions

Early in the season there was a lot of frustration at the number of wide open threes the team was giving up, and rightfully so. But there were some that pointed out that the team was installing a new defensive scheme that took time to get the wrinkles out. I assume this is largely Sweeney.

In essence, they keep Wemby in the lane as much as possible on D. Opposing teams always want to pull Vic out of the paint on actions, forcing him to guard a shooter on the perimeter. The Spurs refuse to do this as much as they can, by having him dip down and, if there is another defender in his area, they swap. In a way, they're making a switch without being forced to buy a screen or action.

This lead to tons of open looks as the players learned how to do it -- it's super easy to give up shots if you fuck it up. But at this point, they have it down pretty solid, and it's pretty rare that VW is pulled out especially early in the shot clock. Really impressive.

10 games ago. A lot of moaning and bitching was going on about Mitch Johnson. He made some key adjustments- moving a slumping Unc to the bench was key and the Spurs have been cooking well on both ends since then. I hope the moaners and bitchers give props to Mitch now for doing his part.

lol tbh I have forgiven Mitch ever since he finally shown he has grown some balls and bench Grandpa Barnes. Grandpa Barnes give us nothing if his 3s are not falling.

Having Vassell and Champ in the starting lineup has a much better chance that we can maintain consistent on the defensive end and either of them can get hot shooting 3s and give us an early big lead.

the guy ran a hammer play against the Kings. That's all I needed to see. We haven't run that set since like 2019. Also the Fox Wemby pick & roll with Devin Vassell as a back screener is absolutely lethal.

I thought Mitch coached very well against Detroit, He helped the team keep its composure against a border line dirty Pistons and managed well the rotation in particular in the 4th, he gave a nice breather to Vic there, played him 35 min... and kept our guard rotation tight. To nitpick a bit, I thought in that kind of physical game he could have used more Carter Bryant in particular with Barnes not bringing shooting. On a night where you have all the spacing you need with Vassell on fire and Champ, you don't need to play him that much tbh... I also would like to see a bit more min for Dylan, hard to find rythm with going off bench back and forth for a couple of min... at the end 18 min is not enough. The equation is complicated but that's why he received a fat salary.
