I'd say this is a championship team, especially with Harrison Barnes finally taken out of the starting lineup a-la Steve Smith in '03, but it's missing two big things. Two big holes on the team:

-PA Announcer
-Play-By-Play Commentator

Sean is still good old Sean, and I hope Bill's leukemia is under control (not that he will ever be well enough to come back and work fulltime, he put in tons of work and 3.5 championships for us, and deserves the rings to go with that as much as anyone not named Timmy/Manu/Parker/Pop).

If we could somehow get back someone on the quality level of Joel Meyers, like somehow buy him away from the terrible Pelicans (yes i know he went to the Lakers in 2004 but that was a monetary offer he couldn't refuse at the time). And then bring in a much better crowd pleaser to be PA announcer at Frost Bank, maybe either Stan Kelly or Big Kev Brock has a son? Someone on that level. PA announcers in general across the league just aren't as good anymore at least the non-legacy ones imo. But I'd like to have someone S-tier again like we had up until 2012 except for the most of that 2009 season.

Thoughts?

I’d be happy to get Chip back

I would agree with this as well. The free throws suck from everyone not named Wemby this year. Then again, they weren't very good when Chip was here, but that was mostly the players' fault. The three point shooting could improve, tbh. I don't know why Engelland left in the first place.

I would have been at one point, but OKC isn’t all that as a 3 point shooting team, and I’m happy with our progress this year.
Mainly the free throws are the problem. They're going to need to buy Mitch a lot of new cars at this point with all those bricks at the charity stripe.

Our PA guy is fine. He's not the best in the business but he ain't Stan Kelly. And Tobey has been solid as the play by play guy.

Real answer to this question is a couple 3&D forwards with size that can rebound

He left for $$$. OKC offered it and we didn't match.

If you want a serious answer, it’s experience. Almost everyone universally agrees this team is a contender. The main thing holding people back from outright picking them to win it all at this point is that teams simply don’t go from missing the playoffs to winning a championship.

Back-up center still. Kornet fall off has meant this team can't stop anybody when Wemby is off the floor..CB's emergence at least covered up a bit in the PF hole

While it's a case of coulda woulda shoulda, if the Spurs had Wemby and Fox available for 65+ games each last season rather than 63 combined they likely would have made the playoffs, perhaps even the second round, and that would have been the "normal" stepping stone between lottery and true contender.

good points. The young guy with Sean sux. The PA announcer annoys the fuck outta me with the FT chant where the fans have to echo him. The team needs another quality rim protector big man with a post game. Wemby and Kornet dont post up in the block, They have improved 3 point shooting and three point defense dramatically but could use another 3d although CB looks like he is the future there.

We need help across the Front Court. SF, backup PF (since Wemby plays that on offense) and a C. Best player available really. Those 2nds could bring in someone if we are drafting young and willing to mould them into what we need and what they can become.

Given the profile of wemby I’m giving up on having a backup who can fill in on defence to even remotely that level, as long as it’s not a layup line then it’s good enough, just so long as the backup can score and set screens for our second unit to keep up on offence then I’m fine. So I’m other words Kornet is good for me, it is up to the Harper’s and the Keldons to keep up on that end and work hard on defence.

The free throw echo chant is here to stay. Long SA tradition

People didn’t like Bill when he replaced Joel Myers. Change is scary, but necessary.

The problem isn't so much the announcers but the lack of any professional setup around them.

Most NBA teams have postgame shows with an in-studio panel of three or more.

The Spurs have a guy in the stands bantering with a very talented but still very much in the stands young lady.

The Spurs were better when the studio crew worked out of Dallas.

It's been a slow decline with only Sean still around to maybe try to maintain some credibility.

Eh, Bill and Joel are about the same age, Bill was already here when Meyers was here but he was the backup in 2001 and 2002, kinda split games 50/50 in 2003 with Joel when Sean was working for ESPN, then when Sean came back here Joel went to the Lakers and Bill became the clear cut #1 for almost 3 years until they brought back Dave Barnett (why??) to split games with Bill in 2007, but that only lasted that season, then Bill was back to being #1 until he got cancer

Joel is going to outlive Bill. I don't believe change for no reason, like re-painting a sign a different color, is necessary. It's necessary that Bill needed to be replaced because he got very sick, but he didn't need to be replaced with this apathetic guy with no pedigree.

And Joel never needed to be replaced. Sure the Lakers had infinitely more money and there isn't a salary cap on team broadcasters, but we could have made a better effort to keep him with SS&E.
