what’s the temperature like? don’t live in SA but family and friends do, their bubble is making it seem like it’ll pass but who knows. the loser contingent will always try to hold the city back

It is a loser mentality to say”no,I won’t tax other people so we can have nice things”.

The one strong card that the Pro forces have, again, is the Rodeo. If this passes, they get possession of the FBC. They’ll be driving voters that normally wouldn’t care.

I see it passing easily come election time. If we didn’t have Wemby it would be different. Threats from other cities like Austin should be taken seriously, though. So what if a new training facility was recently built? Build another one in Austin.

We’ve gotten used to the annual Rodeo Road Trip but to be honest it reinforces the small mindedness we’ve had since the Good Government League days.

The thing with building it downtown is that there are already bars and restaurants that can be built upon. Not the false promise made when the current arena was built.

There’s a bigger issue with pro sports leagues wanting or demanding new arenas/stadiums. It’s pretty shitty to leave an older facility without a real plan for its reuse that isn’t a false promise. What happens when shiny new facilities get outdated after 25-30 years? What happens to Jerryworld? I guess we’ll find out here in 2055 when Pop retires as president of basketball operations.

Vegas pls

it was almost a decade ago when there was some talk of the raiders potentially moving to SA and i remember thinking it would be cool if my 2 teams were in the same city. could plan a weekend trip to watch the spurs on a saturday, raiders on a sunday, etc

then the raiders moved to vegas. then i moved to vegas (albeit temporarily). now bring the spurs over and the plan will fall into place. becky is already here winning.

Older people are the main voters. That is a main obstacle.

this dork’s tweet is why I made my original post in this thread. another smug liberal type, I can tell he’s secretly hoping for it to fail.

also not to be a dick but anybody that’s spent 5 minutes in the east side/area around sbc center knows that it’s beyond gentrification. a really stupid false equivalence to downtown which is probably the best in Texas

edit: I just can’t wrap my head around why anybody would be opposed to using a tourism tax for what it’s made for.

You would have to define an “older voter”. Someone who’s followed the Spurs all their life or would it really be a younger voter who aren’t as invested. A vote like this is usually opposed by conservatives, btw.

the “no” to project marvel appeals to two braindead sides of the same coin. The “muh taxes” types that have don’t know how/what the tourism tax can be used for & the community activist what about-artists that see red when money is being used for anything other than the lib pet project of the day.

re: old folks, for every Fox News boomer there’s 2-3 orange man bad/money bad/billionaire sports owner bad old fogey. where we are as a country

because most fat americans can‘t comprehend the financing. They are still thinking the arena will be built from their hard earned tax money which is not the case.
Thinking this isn't a good idea for the city itself is completely out of touch.
Having a potential GOAT candidate in one of the most popular sports, especially considering he already said he wants to spend his entire career with your small market franchise is one of the biggest jackpots you can get.
Downtown arena would generate way more sellout crowds and way more revenue for all the local businesses.
Getting someone as good as Wemby turns the city into a prime sports tourism destination.

And Wemby is already way more marketable than the big three ever was.
With him and these athletic guards we're going to be one of the most exciting teams to watch, polar opposite of the big3 "boring" era.

I live in SA. There is a vocal (hopefully minority) that would be opposed to this regardless of what the plan was. Tim, Tony and Manu could come out and say they were funding it and a lot of dumbasses here would complain that they aren’t donating the money to charity or how it’s a bad thing because ticket and parking prices would increase. There’s also a group that don’t think the team will move regardless of what happens

anything below 500million is a good deal. i know it's cool to say teams abuse cities but the spurs are better than most franchises in not being assholes and fielding good teams. if you don't spend 500m on this you have to spend 500m on your downtown to make it suck less. do you want the spurs to create a mini fiefdom or fix something else.

I hope they sell it this way, the money gets spent do you trust the spurs to hold their term to bargain. Suck we can't get federal money for this bc of politics

Things get nicer things get more expensive. What a concept. This is how to lose a basketball team

For those who don't remember, being able to go to Spurs games downtown is a really cool experience. Being able to park and ride to a place for a game is nice, but downtown San Antonio is a destination year-round, which further justifies the expense. Being able to watch a game downtown while the game is going on is fun, as the people from the game flood into downtown to eat and drink and hang out afterward.

The Spurs are the only game in town, and probably will be forever unless you do stupid shit to save a few bucks. Banishing them to that fucking barn in a shit part of town is the most un-sanantonio shit ever.

SA is a great city which I love dearly. I hope they do it right.

Early voting begins next week Bexar County residents! Monday, October 20th - Friday, October 31st. There is too much misinformation and negativity about Props A & B to take this lightly. Do not bet on certain victory.. Go vote!

I dont live in SA so I dont care, but for those of you that do, if you think your taxes won't rise eventually to fund a large part of this you're naive and delusional. You the taxpayer in SA will foot the bill for most of it, regardless of the bullshit the billionaires try to sell you.

The exact deal and language of it should be completely disclosed to the tax payer before there's any vote on this, but that won't happen. Let's face it, 95+ percent of the electorate are ignorant morons who wouldn't comprehend the back handed ways in which the Spurs and city are going to fuck you over on this.

Up here where I live in the metroplex they're talking about creating a new stadium for the Dallas Stars in my city. I'm a big Stars fan, but I don't want to foot the bill for a stadium when their current one in downtown Dallas is great already. But the billionaire owner wants to also own and control all of the entertainment venues around the stadium, and he can't in downtown Dallas. So he'll find a way to fuck us citizens out of the money to make it happen. Because "we the people" are mostly fucking morons.

The unfortunate thing is how the discourse has changed from an entertainment district with an arena as an anchor tenant to help revitalize downtown to solely a spurs arena issue. A change that happened when the old mayor left and the new wack job came in.

San Antonio’s economy is centered around 2 things. The military and tourism. Downtown and tourism have been on a slow downward slope since the mid 2000s and got hit hard from COVID and hasnt recovered. I have an office downtown and downtown used to be great. Now it’s horrible. The city thought downtown was booming, tourism and conventions were booming, so didn’t see the need to invest to keep it up. If it isn’t revitalized by something, tourism and conventions are going to keep drying up and there goes one of the city’s two main income streams.

Opponents claim convention and tourism jobs are low paying jobs. Yeah but at least they are jobs. Jobs that will disappear. And why are big corporations going to come and bring high paying jobs when the city couldn’t take care of the one asset it had, that wanted to stay and was willing to invest in the city.

I really don’t think people understand the ramifications of the Spurs leave and/or downtown keeps on its downward spiral. San Antonio is going to get even poorer, have even less corporations and good paying jobs and one of their two major sources of income is going to continue to dry up and get passed up by other cities. But at least your insurance wont get taxed .50 cents for your rental and you won’t get taxed .50 cents for your staycation. I mean there will be nowhere worth staying at downtown and you won’t have a job to pay for it but oh well.

the spurs are what separates San Antonio and Laredo. move there if you want low taxes and fuck all to do lmao

Sure, the extra 2.4 million residents in the metro have nothing to do with it.

This is a prime example of what I mean when I say 95 percent of the electorate are ignorant morons. Dude thinks the Spurs are the difference between SA and Laredo. A town with all of 250k population max.

the fact that you dont get the comparison shows you too are speaking from yr ass. SA is a small town despite the massive size. It feels small town compared to every other TX city including the one 60mi up north. It feels old and run down.

I really don't know yr agenda , are you just here to shit on SA and blast "IM SMARTER THAN 95% of posters" ?
