Can't wait until we start seeing some design renderings. I really hope they include some kind of section designed to emphasize the Jackals and create a home court advantage.

One word of caution, when proposed design plans were released for the Alamodome, I was stoked! They looked like a futuristic spaceship. Then when the vote passed, they did a bait and switch and we got that fucked up looking Alamodome we have now.

Oh yeah, I definitely remember all of that... but I do think San Antonio has progressed a lot since then as well.

The timing really stands out. These complaints didn’t blow up during the Project Marvel fight itself, but after Prop B passed, when the project moved into the implementation phase. That’s the stage where a mayor can still make things uncomfortable by asking tough questions, demanding transparency, etc. Jones already showed she’s willing to do that. Framing a private yelling and possible cursing incident as a formal complaint at this exact moment won't remove her from office, but it does likely make her less credible and reduces her influence when it matters most. Even if it’s labeled a conduct thing, the effect will probably make it harder for her to interfere with Project Marvel going forward.

BTW I don't live in SA, I'm in LA (lakerville), and I support the project mainly because I would love a new arena for Spurs and want them to stay in SA. It just seems like an obvious play to weaken her credibility, a common political tactic. Again, I support Project Marvel. I'm just saying.

Have you been to Intuit Dome yet? I'm going for my first time for the 4/2 Spurs @ Clippers game. Have heard really cool things about it, so I'm looking forward to it. The idea of "The Wall" is something I'd love for the Spurs to consider for Marvel. Like a whole end of the court with "Jackals Rules"

When I was buying my ticket for that game, StubHub was explicit that no opposing fan gear or cheering was allowed on that end of the court. I don't know if they actually enforce this, but I think that's great and more stadiums should do this.

Sadly I haven’t been yet, but a couple friends have gone and said it’s awesome and totally worth the visit, especially from a tech and fan-experience standpoint. I agree the Wall idea is really cool, and I love that they’re serious about it. That said, the Spurs fanbase is so loyal and so diverse, including a huge international following, that they probably wouldn’t need to enforce it the same way the Clippers do. Still, having a full end of the court with its own identity and energy would be amazing, and I’d love to see the Spurs do something like that with Marvel. Enjoy your first trip to Intuit Dome, Spurs-Clippers is a great way to experience it.

I saw on Reddit or Twitter I don’t remember some guy who was courtside at the wall wearing opponent gear was given a warning business card thing to remove/cover gear or get kicked out. YMMV

She has no influence. The Mayor in SA is pretty much ceremonial. The hard truth is that she is basically an at large council member with one vote. I’m not sure she knew that when she ran for office.

By not recognizing that she needs to take the L and move on with other things, she’s pretty much sealed her fate three years from now.

As for her conduct, this is just the first public break through. There have been leaks that she’s just awful to work for or with.

I ended up buying a ticket in another section, so it won't be an issue for me... but I did think it was kind of cool. The interwebs said they usually just move you to another section as opposed to kicking you out.

Mayor of San Antonio has historically been a pretty decent stepping stone into larger party administrative politics (such as cabinet secretary) since it is still the top administrator of one of the 10 largest municipalities in the country... but you turn your stepping stone into a squishy cow patty when you fumble the bag as badly as she has.

I get that the SA mayor doesn’t have a ton of formal power, but saying she has no influence isn’t really accurate. Even with one vote, a mayor can still shape the conversation by asking tough questions in public, pushing for more briefings, or forcing staff to explain details they’d rather move past. That alone can slow things down and bring more attention to issues people want to keep quiet during implementation.

The mayor also has a bigger platform than any single council member. When she raises concerns, the media covers it, and that creates pressure even if the votes are already there. On a project like Marvel, where timelines and negotiations matter, that kind of scrutiny can absolutely make things harder.

I’m not saying the conduct issue isn’t real or shouldn’t be looked at. I’m saying once Prop B passed, the only leverage left was credibility and relationships. Undercutting those doesn’t remove her, but it does make it easier to move forward without friction. Both things can be true at the same time.

Also, the mayor's recent attack that minority owner Michael Dell donated 6 billion to Trump but can't pay for the arena is going to hit home with a lot of people as Trump's popularity falls further and hostility towards billionaires increases as Epstein Files continues to make news.
 
Long story short tourism taxes and visitor revenue would be a make or break if the new arena helps the city fiscally. I'm not talking about its effect on fan enjoyment though. This is the power a player like Wemby has. Obviously, I'm not saying anything people don't already know.

The whole "just dribble" thing with LeBron is actually the perfect example of people pretending stars don’t matter beyond the court, which is bullshit. Guys like LeBron, and now Wemby, don’t just sell jerseys or make games fun, they move attention, travel, and real money. That’s what actually matters for the city. A generational player turns random Tuesday games into bucket-list trips, pulls in out-of-town and international fans, keeps the team nationally relevant, and that’s what shows up in hotel nights and tourism taxes. That’s why the arena either works or doesn’t based on visitor revenue, not vibes, and why Wemby isn’t just a basketball cheat code but an actual economic one, even if none of this is exactly some big revelation. Anyway, I'm done ranting lol.

Its wild, I'm not sure if this is Sakai trying to reach out to the anti Project Marvel group in an effort to win reelection or what.

I saw him as never anything more than a short term caretaker in the position and Niremberg for all his faults was able to effectively get things done whether you liked what he did or not, he was able to build coalitions. Not sure this is a winning position at all for Sakai.

Maybe his old age is starting to catch up with him. Which is fine, too many old geriatrics in leadership positions in State and Federal leadership anyway.

Has it though? Castro and Cisneros, arguably our most well recognized Mayors, topped out at HUD Secretary. Ed Garza, who i thought showed promised, just disappeared. Wolff is a power, but locally. We'll see what Nirenberg does in the next few years.

Compare that to a Phoenix whose current Mayor is married to a sitting Senator, and the previous one in now in the House of Representatives.
 
Being anti Project Marvel a this point is like being anti US independence from Britain. It’s a done deal. The ballot measures passed. The state money they can only use for this sort of project improvements has been allocated. Anyone trying to unwind it is committing political suicide. I know GOJ is on that path, but Sakai must be pretty far down in the polls to pick that same dark path.

It's just my opinion, but to me Cabinet Secretary is much more prestigious position than Congressperson and certainly more than spouse-of-Senator. I'd even argue that Congressperson is a step back from Mayor of a large city. Nirenberg (who I actually have a personal relationship with) is taking a step back in running for County Judge, but that's one you don't get termed out of and you can life high on the hog like Wolff has.

Steps upward from Mayor of SA (or any other major metro area) are cabinet level or statewide offices, imho.
