Official End of Season Awards Thread

Kon over Flagg for ROTY is going to be ridiculous. Flagg has been the focus of every opposing defense for almost the entire season and has still produced borderline All Star caliber numbers, certainly better numbers than Kon who is an elite shooter but is not asked to do nearly as much (and DOESN'T do nearly as much).

Flagg's recent explosions will help his case, but to me its a more extreme case of the Wemby/Chet arguments, but Kon is outplaying rookie Chet and Flagg is not as good as rookie Wemby

Im still going with Kon but if Flagg ends the year with a more 40/50 bombs, he’s probably gonna get it tbh

Flagg is blatantly stat chasing in meaningless games and instead of being called out for it like so many others have been and would be, he's being lauded and it'll be the excuse for the media to do what they were always going to and hand him an underserved ROY.

He is 1000% the rookie of the year. That dude has been balling. And he’s definitely the next big star in the league. I like Harper a lot, but let’s be real if we had gotten Cooper Flagg the championship is pretty much a forgone conclusion.

I’m a little surprised more people aren’t higher on Cooper Flagg around here. I think he’s absolutely phenomenal. Going to be one of the best players in the league in a few years.

I have zero doubt that Flagg will be better long term. But that’s not a factor for RotY tbh.
Fair enough, but I think he’s earned that award. He came in with plenty of hype and he has completely lived up.

Flagg is still by far the better prospect but kon had been amazing this year.

What Kon brought to the team was order, the hornets were a bunch of street ballers last year but with Kon things just fell into place. It’s not all him, coaching, the players growing up, things like that all makes a big impact but kong just gives that order on both offence and defence.

Sure, but Kon is also producing at elite efficiency on a winning team. His EPM is very impressive for a rookie.
It's rookie of the year, not "who would you rather build your team around long term the award"

Same with what wemby is doing for MVP lmao. But ofcourse you wont complain cause its wemby.

He just dropped 45 on the Lakers and they're playing for seeding. Doesn't look like stat chasing to me, he's literally the only guy on the team that can consistently create his own offense and teams are having a hell of a time trying to stop him.

Since when has being on a winning team been a factor in the ROTY award? Were you arguing for Chet over Wemby in 2024?

Forget long term, I would rather have Flagg on my team in 2026 than Kon.

Just looking at this year's draft and it looks really amazing:
- Flagg is definitely going to be franchise talent;
- Harper, Edgecombe and Kon look like potential franchise talent, but good likelihood of being All-NBA level guys. All three of them can be #2 on a contender, or a #1 on a playoff team.
- Bailey, Tre and Fears look like bucket getters. If they can work on other parts of the game like defence and facilitation, can be all-star players.
- Coward still looks impressive, can be a solid starter in the league for a long time. Not sure about his upside due to his age.
- Queen, Demin, Nique Clifford, Wolf, Riley, Traore, and our very own Carter Bryant can all turn out to be good role players.
- Raynaud and Kalkbrenner looks like solid pieces for good teams, or can be major contributors for bad teams.
- Then there are those Maluach, Small, Asa Newell, Drake Powell guys who could be NBA journeyman or even a decent contributor on the right team.
- CMB looks great and I can see him being a Green/Bam type of player if he develops right.
- Essengue, Sorber haven't played yet due to injuries, so jury is still out.

Guys like CMB, Egor, and Kalkbrenner, can be 2nd team material in most drafts.

We will see how this year's crop stacks up in a few years.
24 draft looks pretty bad as expected.
23 draft looks good with Wemby, the Thomspon twins, Miller, Cason Wallace and Lively, but then Podz and Jaquez made first team, so did Greg Jackson. I am not sold on Keyonte George as I just think he's a tank commander. Camara is great, Black and Walsh could become somehting great.
22 draft is relatively weak. Chet is an uber role player, Paolo is a 3rd banana masquerading as a #1. Jalen Duren is a solid #2/3. So is J-Dub. Jabari Smith catches a lot of flack but he is a decent player. Braun is in the irght situation. Dyson Daniels is on and off.
21 had Cade, Wagner, Mobley, Sengun, and Barnes, which are great, Jalen Johnson, Dosunmu and TMIII seems to be coming alive latelym but then the quality just falls off.
20 Haliburton was amazing of course along with Antman, Ball is a loser, Beef Stew is insane, Okongwu, Pritchard, McDaneils, Avdija, Bane and Bey are OK. Then there are the Vassells and Tre Jones. Other than that it just dropps off.
19 is probably the biggest disappointment. Both Morant and Zion turned out to be disappointments for different reasons. PJ Washington, Gafford, and Rui are role players. garland is looking worse and worse. Keldon, Barrett and Coby White looks like lifetime bench players (good ones, but with limitations). NAW looks great.

This 65 game threshold is so dumb. There shouldn't be a threshold, but if there is, over 79% of the season is way way too high.
If you have to have it, make it 1/2 the season, 50 games=60% at the highest.

Vic and Joker (hopefully) barely make it, Luka/Ant/Cade all miss. Kawhi/Booker/Deni/Siakam are all at 63 games or less today. SGA/Maxey/Flagg are at 67= one minor ankle injury in March and not eligible. Only 5 of the top 30 scores have hit at least 70 today and nearly 1/2 won't be eligible.

Silver just keeps making the league worse. He turned post-season awards into a freaking attendance award. 4 of the 5 1st team guys will miss or just make it. All-NBA is fucking meaningless to history if it doesn't tell you who the best players in the league are. 1/2 the games are enough to know who the best are. Stupid and likely to lead to guys that don't deserve Mega contracts getting them, which is really bad for the league and every player not on a Mega contract.
How is this league with the best athletes on earth so poorly managed?

Cade is going to return today against MIL and try to play the final 3 games of the season, which would give him 64. There is a clause in the CBA that allows him to file for an extraordinary circumstance exemption, which would then have to go to an independent arbitrator to determine whether he is eligible for EOY awards or not.

I hope he gets ruled eligible, but the fact that there are all these rules, exceptions, hoops to jump through, etc. is all the evidence I need to know that it's not a good system and needs to be made more simple and straight forward. The "65 games or X minutes" seems like a very good proposal to me. 65 games at 20 minutes would be 1300 minutes. I'd propose making it something like 1500 minutes. For reference, Wemby - who has the lowest MPG of any of the superstars - is over 1800 minutes already).

This bs wouldnt have been necessary if they just imposed heavy and consistent fines on teams that load manage tbh.

His impact/advanced metrics have been mediocre across the board. Definitely empty calories category and nowhere near Wembanyama's rookie season (4.2 EPM on a 22-win team compared to Flagg negative -0.3)
