Analysis Hello new coaching era...hello defense.

I know it's only one game, but we are seeing the effects of the coaching change. We are seeing the effects of a new era and new coaching minds. I can't recall any of this defensive urgency from last season. But here we are, and I'm here for it.
Having a few competent defenders also helps, I don't think it's down to coaching only

I generally agree that the Mavs are not likely to be very good this season.
And I doubt that other teams will defend Wemby with centers as much as the Mavs did.
We'll get to find out if Wemby's improved strength overcomes the wings that were often put on him defensively last season.
I expect him to eat those people up

Is Devin consistent on D?
I remember when we drafted him his profile was a 3 and D player

you ask if Devin is consistent on D ? :st-lol: you new here ? Devin is all but consistent on Defense, he is usually consistently bad BUT yesterday he had a solid performance in that regard. I believe he is starting to feel he better starts to care. With our 3 guards + KJ + Sochan returning... some are gonna lose PT. It seems the time of guaranteed PT no matter how you play is over

He didn't look terrible last night. More effort than I've seen since the Spurs first drafted him. Wemby said himself that players are going to get held accountable. I feel like we are about to see a serious culture shift on that end

Yeah. If he's going to body and shoulder up like he did to Davis and Lively to goobers like that dork that got traded from Houston, some peeps are in for a rude awakening.

not really a playing time thing than energy issue. Less offensive responsibility and ballhandling duties will give him more energy for the defensive end.

I never thought about it during the game, but I wonder if Sean Sweeny had a big influence in how the Spurs played the Mavs as I forgot during the game he was on their coaching staff last season.
Did Dallas lose a bit of their identity not having him organize their defense and they're having to rebuild it/work it out again? Did he give the Spurs insights into their players that may have helped more than if they had of played against anyone else that night?

That will test his commitment to play in the paint more. Those smaller wings are able to attack his dribble better on the perimeter. He had a lot of turnovers in the past trying to dribble past those wings. He needs to operate out of the post/ elbow when they're on him and clear out to give him the option to cook the guy in the post or pass when they bring doubles.

Do you think his handles were better, though? Too many people on Youtube kept saying he's improved his handles and they think he can do that against anyone. I don't think a lot of them realized or watched him last year when trying to dribble against smaller players. They did look tighter in game one, just don't know if it's because he mostly handled the ball against bigs that he didn't get stripped.

Thanks man

Yeah Wemby is super competitive and that's a good thing

lol no but I haven't had the time to watch full Spurs games in a long while lol

10 minute highlights don't tell the whole story tbh

Just finished watching the Dallas game (I know) and I have to say our defence was more a function of the Mavs offensive ineptitude as any incredible defensive plays by the spurs.

We played harder and more organized on defence for sure, crashed the boards harder, actually rotated mostly correctly, but there are so many times that the Mavs missed easy bunnies, relied heavily on flops that backfired and just have no one to orchestrate the offence.

As bad as their offence was their defence was probably worse but that’s another thread

We’re still hemorrhaging open 3’s, maybe.

I’d like to see Bryant get some more minutes. He’s probably already the best we have at navigating screens and getting to his man. And his shot looks perfectly fine for him to be parked in the Barnes spot.

Any team that starts Julian Champagnie and Harrison Barnes is never going to be a great defensive team sadly. We've improved, but the personnel on this roster is still holding us back on that side of the ball.

Yeah, both aren't great. HB not too good on offense either so far this season :(. Really don't know what to do about Harrison, as he's been the constant professional and likely helped the young guys a lot the past year. He's a super character guy too. I'd have a hard time trading or benching him if I were in charge.

He was back to being Mr. 100% yesterday

Watching the scoreboard yesterday when Wemby was in vs out was insane.
The second quarter started and the Raptors scored like 3 points until the last few minutes when Biyombo came in and they brought the game closer.
There's a reason Wemby didn't get a block till the last 5 minutes, they were completely neutered in the paint and were unwilling to shoot close to him at all.

Just superhuman stuff from a 21 year old...
