Stan Van Gundy had a interesting three-part solution for tanking he shared on the Zach Low show:
1. Abolish the draft
2. Abolish the rookie salary scale
3. Abolish the individual max for players
The salary cap would still be in place and SVG’s argument is that the top incoming rookies will choose a big contract over signing for whatever the good teams can offer, so teams will have to strategically manage their cap to be able to sign the top rookies, which usually means you aren’t a contending team. SVG acknowledges that the Players Association would never go for this, because higher max contracts means less for non-max players.
It’s an interesting, free-market concept… and it would eliminate the incentive to lose games… but teams would put together some pretty horrific rosters ahead of a year like this one. You could definitely foresee a team having a roster full of min salary guys or expiring deals so that they could sign as multiple of the top guys.
Then you’d have a team like the Lakers, who are going to have an estimated 45-60MM in cap space this summer. Having the LA market behind them, they’d probably be able to shoehorn in two of the top guys, and then still extend Reaves and even bring back LeBron if they wanted.
It’s interesting, but I don’t really care for it personally… thought it worth sharing though.
