Protect Champ or Carter Bryant for the 8th spot?

That's a great point.

I know it's a different sport, but how are the Raiders doing there?
I thought the NBA was underwhelmed with the Cup Finals in Vegas and may even think to not only move the semifinals away from Vegas next year, but the final as well.
If that is what you think about the reception of the Basketball product in Vegas, better not start a team there
I think having your own team makes a big difference. The Vegas hockey team is doing very well and won a cup within 5 years or expansion.

NBA team will do better than cup

well the raiders are fucking terrible, so enthusiasm in the city isnt really there. but they basically have no home field advantage right now. then again, vegas embraced the knights right away when they were good right away

It feels like any Vegas team will always suffer from strong opponent crowds just because Vegas is such an easy and attractive place for opposing fans to visit.

I expect our team to look different when this finally happens and our choices will be different then.
If it was TODAY I’d let Champ or Vassell go. Probably Champ.
If we had a decent alternative PF option I’d rather go with Barnes to be honest but he’s critical for now.

Resurfacing this as player development, and team chemistry has shown itself a bit. Carter Bryant is looking more and more legit with a real three ball. Vassell looks downright vital for our spacing. Keldon “The Mayor” Johnson is unimpeachable. Champagnie is cheap.

Kornet’s production should be replaceable. With a an aging vet or developing rookie.

I do not know if Seattle has the infrastructure to host a team anytime soon, though perhaps wherever the Kraken play is suitable?

Because of this, let’s assume that 2027 or 2028 is the soonest this expansion draft would happen… I think at that point the Spurs would leave either Fox or Vassell unprotected and hope the expansion draft is a way to get off a contract that is starting to be problematic with Castle and Harper extensions kicking in.
I still believe this. Spurs likely leave both unprotected by this point and use the expansion draft to solve their future cap problems.

It would be a fun exercise to see who were the top players left unprotected for the Grizz/Rap expansion draft and see if they were butt hurt returning to original team.

You can also pay teams to take one of the players you don't care about, which prevents anyone else from being drafted from your team.

Teams can also take free agents to get their Bird rights, if I recall.
Seattle get ready to learn Polish

Dominique Wilkins was made available by the Celtics, didn't get selected, and then bounced to Greece to win EuroLeague MVP (and the title) before returning to lead our Duncan Tank Team

Other notable unprotected and unselected players from 1995 expansion draft and how they did immediately after that:

Ron Harper: started all but 2 of the 273 games he played in for CHI over the next 4 seasons, won 3 more chips
Dale Ellis: had two pretty good seasons for Denver, averaging 14.9 and 16.6 ppg while remaining one of the league's best snipers at the time
Vernon Maxwell: ended up getting waived by Houston, went to Philly and had a great year (before returning back to the Spurs the next year)
Doug Christie: didn't do shit for NYK, eventually got traded to TOR for Willie Anderson (who we left unprotected and got taken by the Raptors)
Rex Chapman: after no one bit in the expansion draft, Bullets traded him to Miami where he was pretty good

Notable names left unprotected but gone unselected in the 2004 expansion draft below. This one was wild because it was filled with a lot of names who, if they were in their prime, would have been very sought after by the Bobcats... but they were all washed by then. Bobcats ended up picking the largest assembly of bums you've ever seen instead.

Penny Hardaway
Scottie Pippen (retired anyway)
Allan Houston (was still decent in the following season, which would be his last)
Antoine Walker (Walker actually went on to still be a 20ppg scorer after this... there must have been a story here)
Alonzo Mourning
Jerry Stackhouse
Christian Laettner

Spurs left Malik Rose and Charlie Ward unprotected by Bobcats said nah we good

Also keep in mind that the expansion draft would be the summer of 27. That means we also would have whoever we draft with this years hopeful lottery pick to protect

Wemby
Castle
Harper
Bryant
2026 1st round pick
Champ
Keldon
Vassell

Order of who gets priority for protection imo.

Potentially perfect opportunity for Fox there. Gets to headline a new franchise and get his points really going as he looks for a new contract pushing 30.

Also more reason for us to look at trading fox in the next couple of years and hopefully get some picks back. If we can get those picks after the draft that could help us out.

I'd keep em both and not protect fox. Free way to get rid of that contract. At this rate it may cost us to move him in the future. He's a great player and I don't hate him but overpaid for what he brings. Would be awkward if he wasn't selected though.

I’m not sure if any expansion team would want to take on a max contract that puts them in purgatory, for a player with no additional upside.

This expansion thing was already talked about, ad nauseum. The owners don’t currently seem to have an appetite for it, with the increasing revenue streams. Getting a one time expansion fee isn’t worth splitting the cash pie into 32 pieces, lowering their revenue. If the next media deal isn’t as lucrative, maybe then, but that’s years away.
NBC is losing big $$ on the NBA right now I don't expect them to get a bigger deal next time it comes up. That's just a guess of course but I think sports viewership has peaked a decade ago

He already headlined a shitty team, and noped right out of there.

The only thing that I know should happen if they expand and add Seattle is the Spurs should be moved to the eastern conference

So do the Sonics get back their pre-2008 official history from OKC or does a franchise record follow from the ownership chain? That means Seattle will start from scratch?

Part of the agreement for the Thunder moving to OKC was that when/if Seattle got a new team they got to keep their name and history tbh.

Makes sense and glad that's going happen. The Sonics had too much legacy for them to be excised from the league's official history book like that. They are not the Pelicans or Memphis who likely get relocated or moved to the East and nobody will care.
