Analysis Any Mitchsuckers going to do damage control for these gutless worms?

Am I the only one who thinks we should've went for a 3 in the final posession, instead of trying to force OT with 3 players fouled out?
I'm with you. Should have tried to get one of our shooters (Devin, Lindy, Champ... there are enough options on our team for that moment even with HB fouled out) off a screen for the win. What were we going to do had we made it to OT? Give Rile Minix a run? Going for the win was definitely the play there.

I was yelling that they should just go for the fucking three in the game thread. A 20% chance at a win off a bad shot was always gonna be better than trying to get to OT without Victor for a 0% shot at winning with no one playing well.

Exactly what I was thinking. No idea what they wanted OT for.

Fucking juniors getting schooled by seniors

Fox showed a lot of heart tonight…he truly cares about the family members he tipped off to bet on GS.

Reporting in to the dedicated meltdown thread to say trade Fox and Sochan for the final piece at the 3&D spot and give Harper the keys

The team is fucking around and not being focused in almost every single game.
Mavs and Rockets being the only exceptions.
I'm the first one to say that players need to understand the concept of accountability, but if they don't, the coach needs to lay down the law on them.

This was the most pathetic game of the season given the context.
I watched 82 games during every tanking season, but I can't fucking accept our franchise player throwing 360 no look passes just because we're up like 10 in the second quarter.
Would Pop allow Duncan to fuck around like that?

They were very sloppy and careless. Does Mitch even tell them not turn the ball over?

mitch lost the game singlehandedly by reading baselinebums.com. Guy really thought we wouldn't have gotten nuked from 3 and at the ft line, while playing 2pgs an old sf and 2 centers... wild.

Early concern: He can't manage a double digit lead to save his life

Mitch needs to figure out how to get this team to play focused for 48 minutes. Everytime we are up Wemby tries to play AND1 mixtape basketball and our team loses focus. When you are up big, you have to make the simple plays and just keep executing.

The other thing is that we have the worst 3-point defense in the NBA. That has to change. Doesn't even make sense if you got Wemby locking down the paint. Every perimeter defender should force shooters to put the ball on the floor and funnel them into Wemby.

I don't understand this strategy of leaving guys to shoot threes. Having said that, maybe the other team's shooters are having irrational confidence any time they get a look from three point range because they're happier taking that shot than going inside to challenge Victor.

There were quite a few long rebounds that led to GSW getting many O.Rebs during the final minutes.

Maybe Mitch should consider playing small as well for GSW.

They weren’t leaving guys open at the 3 on purpose. This was the result of playing Kornet with Wemby. They pumped up the interior D and paint scoring but sacrificed the three point shooting defense. It was all scheme. Perhaps they don’t make that choice next time. That option is there when they’re against a tough inside scoring team. It wasn’t a personnel issue - it was a coaching decision.

From a defence standpoint, the Spurs are ranked:

OpponentRestricted AreaPaint (non-restricted)Mid-rangeLeft Corner 3Right Corner 3Above the Break 3
FGM6328103018
FGA85308269
FG%349163024

So the eye test is right, we defend the 3s horribly, especially at the right corner and above the 3.

From what I recall, our help from drivers come from the right side when there is a player driving (because most players are right handed driving down the right) and Wemby is right handed so he is on the left. The problem is the driver already has a closer pass to the right corner so there is less time to recover. (see 10:56 in the clip below, where I have absolutely no idea what Fox was doing).

I don't want to blame Keldon but he is on the right side all the time as well, and he has a tendency of just vacating his man to either help, or worse, ball watch. See 10:35 or so in the clip below. We gave up a wide opened cut but Pod was also left opened at the 3)

For the top of the key stuff, it's just total collapse a lot of times. See 12:17 in the clip below. Fox was totally disengaged on the drive, forcing Wemby to help, which causes Castle to have to come and cover the left 3, but Champaigne is supposed to rotate to the top where he is late, but even if he did, the right corner would be wide opened as well.

12:36, double screen coming and Champaigne is looking at the second screen but appears he didnt' call it out. What should have happened, if they actually are a strong defensive team who knows exactly what to do at what point, would have been to swtich the defenders where Champaigne is now on the 2nd screener, Barnes go on Curry, and Vassell switch onto the first screener (cutter). Instead, we have a Champaigne and Vassell doubling Curry at the top of the 3 pt line with noone guarding the 2nd screener (is that Podz?), while the cutter has a wide opened lane with Barnes being too late to recover, forcing Wemby to rotate and leave Al Horford wide opened at the 3. The only thing that is right (imo) is Wemby came and rotate to help as a last ditch effort because he is the better shot blocker than Fox, and Horford is a further distance away from the pass, giving the defence more room to recover. At that point, Barnes should have been shooting down on Horford to challenge the shot but he was still chasing after the cutter (Butler I believe). Then Champaigne charged over to Horford to challenge but it's way too late and even if Horford missed, nobody was there to box out the second screener (Who I think is Podz) and it likely would have been an offensive rebound by him anyways, as both Barnes and Wemby are way too deep for a rebound off a 3 pter.

13:08. Podz screened curry, both Vassell and Kornhub stuck to Curry, leaving Podz wide opened for a 3. To be fair, you can't leave Curry opened and it appears Vassell got clear instructions to stick to Curry no matter what. If Kornhub didn't cut off the Curry drive, it would have been a wide opened 3 for #3 at the right corner from a Curry kick out, so choose your poison.

I just randomly started at around 10 minute or so of the video and there are issues with every one of them in terms of defending the 3. Good news is that these are easy concepts to manage.

This is because we force opposing teams to shoot less threes because of our slower pace. The metric you should look at is the 3pa of teams when they play the Spurs and when they don’t. If my gut is correct, it will be lower. The Spurs’ strategy is to allow the opposing team to live and die by the three, because they shoot less of them. With a slower pace comes fewer opportunities, which is why the Spurs have invested in players who can score an efficient 2 points - there won’t be a lot of shooting to get hot enough / get in rhythm for threes. That’s the Spurs philosophy around Vic.
