Calling my shot tbh. Mitch isn't ready for this. Feeling that was the plan all along when they hired him...if they felt like Mitch couldn't handle it they didn't have to look anywhere.

Interesting scenario. I thought Mitch wanted Sean Sweeney. Be interesting to know if the Spurs hired him and gave him that position without Mitch asking for him. So you think he will be Mitch's replacement if Mitch craps out? Would they fire Mitch in that scenario, or demote him?

Realistically speaking, this is not who we are.

Spurs value "family culture" and "stability" and will not simply fire a coach just based on 1 season of Head Coach experience.

PATFO are not so impatient or cold-blooded like Boston or LAC front office tbh.

PATFO will give ample time (maybe 3 more seasons) for Mitch to prove himself before deciding other options. :st-popemote:

man this site is going to be hilarious when we drop these next 3 on this brutal road trip

I do not see this happening. Also I know we are ranked well defensively but unless Sweeney is not able to get this 3point defense fixed he does not earn the HC job.

I don't know about that. Feels more like a Doc-Thibs on the 2008 Celtics kind of situation.
Agreed. If Sweeney leaves, it will be after couple of deep Spurs runs (WCF/F) and it won"t be for the Hornets or Pelicans HC job. Similiar to Thibs (Chicago) he will be aiming for a glamorous market and a franchise with a heritage (Reunite with Luka in LA?). Otherwise, he is sitting pretty on an Associate HC salary in non-state Tax market and future contending team with the best player in league..

I don't see Mitch getting canned unless he's severally underperforming with the team like missing playoffs one year or barely making it through play-ins and losing early with a healthy Wemby..He is an internal hire and those tend to get a longer leash..

Read some speculation Mavs will seek to poach him if Kidd moves to their FO.

i think mitch is really just a face. hes there to look the part and be a cheerleader. odds are more they bring in a new experienced coach for a playoffs push then elevate from within.

Nah…

If you just listen to mitch during interviews…he has a whole lot of pops philosophy and outlook and wisdom that naturally comes out and he speaks with forethought…

He carefully chooses what he is saying and measures carefully how it will be perceived and if his words will reach his players.

I think pop sensed that mitch was holding something of weight and importance in him and that coaching would bring this inner depth to come out..

Maybe pop saw a bit of himself at a younger age. I had doubts about mitch last season and was not completely convinced that mitch was the best coach for wemby…

But this season there seems to be a change or maybe a progression that is taking place and the team and organization appear to be headed in the

I think it was on a KOC podcast episode recently where he mentioned that there are rumours that Jason Kidd might be moving on to the Mavs' FO and that Sweeney was one of the candidates they were considering as a head coach replacement for Kidd in Dallas.

I hope not. I'd rather have Sweeney on the Spurs for a while (at least 2-3 seasons before he moves on). I sometimes think I prefer him as the head coach over Mitch. He's got more of a proven track record with the players he's worked with and the results of their work. I like Mitch personality wise, but I don't know if he's a better coach than SS. I guess we have to wait and see how he does.

Bold claim considering that Mitch currently has the second best odds to win COTY. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon imo

I doubt Sweeney would leave right away when he can coach guys like Wemby, Castle, and Harper vs Flagg and role players because you know the Mavs are gonna be stupid enough to compete for the play in instead of hard tanking right now.

Would be absolutely stupid if they try for the play-in. I thought I read this is the last year they'll get their own draft pick for a little while (I haven't looked up what picks they own). They should try and take advantage of that and try and get into the lottery to get another good/great player to try and add to their core.

AD just got injured again, they aren't going anywhere.

Geez, that's insane. I wanted him on the Spurs at some point. Right now, I'd say Porzingis is a much safer bet if I had to choose between the two.
Hopefully that means Atlanta won't trade for him, or actually, would we want Atlanta to trade for him?

I’d have to think really hard before missing a championship run as top assistant to run a poverty team like Dallas. The HC jobs will always be out there if you’re qualified. Might as well ride the Spur train for a while.

Considering that the preseason pundits all had the Spurs fighting for a play-in, I'd say Mitch has outperformed expectations. That said, I can easily see us sliding down to 6 or 7 before this thing is over. Barring a monumental meltdown by this team I can't see Johnson getting replaced.
