During your Prime playing days, hey maybe that's even now altho i think most posters are 30+.
Could you play in one quarter of an NBA game if the ref favoritism was given you the same as SGA gets?

You get to stiff arm at will. Fall down on virtually every missed shot and get rewarded with FTs.
That also enables you to get weaker coverage on plays where the opponent has to back off so as not to see you get another bogus FT line prance.

I'm just going to say, I don't get it. He seems to blatantly be able to do things and get free throws out of it. I just don't get why him and/or why someone from OKC. I wouldn't think the NBA gives a F about him or OKC, so why does he get that kind of treatment? That's the part that throws me off completely. For example, I can understand someone like Luka being in a big market like LA, but why Shai? He's in OKC and I don't think he's that popular outside of OKC, is he?

What I don’t get is everyone knows the calls he gets are BS at this point yet the refs keep giving him the same inexplicable whistle.

It’s got to the point now where the refs are a regular part of the discourse whenever OKC is brought up. You’d think the refs would be made more aware but they seem to be doubling down on the suspect whistle he gets.

Brunson is the same way for the Knicks. He and SGA are gifted so much by the refs.

Again, Brunson is also a guy I can understand as he's on a big market team and the NBA and networks such as ESPN love to push those teams.
I just don't get why SGA gets that whistle and treatment. Yes, the guy is a great player, but why is he getting that kind of whistle. Does the NBA or the average fan care about OKC at all?

i'd be ok with his calls, if he was consistently being called for his pushoffs and lean-ins with his legs

I think he just flails around making unnatural movements more often than the average superstar does so he gets more calls. It also helps that he is still a really good player even if he wasn't foul baiting so he gets "respect " Kinda sucks but that's his style and its been successful for him.

Yeah, true. I'll have to go find that video with his dad last year during the all-star weekend with Gil's Arena where his dad explained his game. I've forgotten what his dad said.
It's most likely that he's forcing the refs to call the fouls with the movements he's doing. I will say, though, aren't those one handed push-offs and chicken wing movements offensive fouls? If they're not fouls by the book, why are those movements allowed?

I thought, if going by the book, they're fouls. Maybe you can get away with them every now and then if they're too subtle for the referee to see every time, but surely the refs are seeing the movement? It seemed TGW was trying to teach Steph some of those same movements during the offseason (Did SGA get them from TGW or did the guard whisper get them from SGA I wonder), but I haven't seen Steph use them in games that much.

they do call them though, but just not often enough to make him stop, just the most blatant ones

Yeah, OK, I don't watch OKC at all. So they do actually call him for offensive fouls sometimes? I think I've only seen it once or twice when they've played the Spurs, but I've seen way more of them let go against the Spurs too the past couple of years.

we should stop shitting on SGA ... the guy is an awesome player maximising his talents, also plays defense and is one of six players nominated for the sportsmanship award this year.

I don't have anything against the guy. It's more - why does he get those calls and other players don't.

I do think he's a fantastic player. I watched an interview with his dad around the time of last season's all-star game (2025) and his dad was basically saying it's not his fault if the refs call the fouls and other players fall for his fakes and moves. I can't remember the whole interview, so I'll have to try and find it and re-watch it. I think he said Shai sort of puts the refs in positions where he forces them to make the calls.

Found the interview again.

Edit : Looks like Brian Windhorst and the guys (Tim MacMahon and Tim Bontemps) had a conversation about Shai and his fouls earlier today on The Hoop Collective

If it's so easy to do that some schlub on a fucking basketball forum thinks that he can do it, how come every player in the fucking NBA isn't doing it? How come he's the only guy who can do it and do it consistently? It's because he practices it, he works really hard at it, he's very good at it, maybe as good as anybody that's ever done it.

You might say it's not real basketball, you might say it's a shitty cheap skill, but it's a skill that nobody else has mastered to the point that he has. It's horrifying to watch, it's terrible basketball, but it's according to the rules and he fucking kills at it.

He is a great, great player. And just because he's a foul merchant and he's maybe the best that's ever been at it doesn't change that he's great.

there is a 0% chance i would survive a quarter. wouldnt be able to stop anybody and i dont think i'd get a shot or barely a pass off

lol, the second I run into a screen (if anybody would set a screen on me and not iso the hell out of me) I’d be hospitalized.

Sometimes people just don’t understand the difference between a pro player and some guy at the Y. A D3 benchwarmer from 30 years ago will destroy anybody here with ease.

I'm sorry for your condition.

the distance in quality between civilians and pros is way larger in basketball than in other sports. I have very good playmaking skills, but wouldn't last even a minute on the floor.

Many NBA players don't want the unethical b.s. meritless calls. They've honed their skills from hard work since childhood and find that kind of gift giving fertilizer to be insulting. Wemby for one.

But some may and regardless, riddle us this:

I believe NFL football is larger gap for civilian. Could be true tho as NBA required dexterity while NFL there are lots of weightlifting brutes etc who could probably last a quarter given the right position and team.
